What a bunch of pussies! Whinging about sleep and how soggy it is ahh! poor little diddums.

I thought the vikings were all roughty-toughty, rape and pillage, drinking grog out of their enemy's skulls, etc, etc. Seems their decendants aren't.

Yeh....but it was far more realistic than those three t****** last week who pretended to sail to Cowes and then come close to winning what was clearly a fixed race!! Or did I miss something?

Got a brief pic of her coming into Dublin;

I would agree with you completely Fatipa. I also have to admit that both of those programs have got me seriously considering switching from power to sail. It looks a lot of fun! Any pointers to good sail training in the North East would be much appreciated.
ps... Sorry about the avatar in your saily forum /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Was it a trick of the light or did I see white-over-green masthead lights during the night shots?

Pretty impressive creaming along at 9 knots though!

I will third the comments you made. I thought 3 Men in Another Boat excellent entertainment and the filming was brilliant. Have watched it 3 times now. Just because we are yotties, we needn't be so picky.

Try Knocking on the door at your local yacht club, someone always needs crew.

[/ QUOTE ] Good advice... I may just try that - Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It was a fascinatng film - thank goodness 'cos I bolted my pub supper to get home for it. But isn't it extraordinary how film flattens seas and calms winds. It undoubtedly was Force 9 they were in with a sextuply reefed sail, but it could have been a gentle 4 in nice warm sunshine for all the pictures showed.

I do agree, though, that the Vikings would have managed some sort of canvas or flax shelter against the weather. They must have been tough cookies, though.

Surley the real Vikings would have rigged some sort of shelter and not slept in the rain snow etc.on the boat that is.

I think they would have probably been wrapped up in finest animal fur which would prove far warmer & drier than man-made oilies.

I dont agree,these men allegedly discovered america so they were used to long sea voyages,to design and sail a vessel as complex as a longship took clever thinking, i dont think they would have put up with living rough on the ship,they didnt sleep rough when they were in port so it was a logical next step to rig up some sort of shelter on board,its common sense.so why didnt the crew on the tv show do it?

The vessels that sailed over the oceans weren't longships, they were most likely the knarr design. With a much wider beam

One replica of this design completed a circumnavigation in the early 80's; Saga Siglar
