That's an habit I developed back in the days when I used to keep an eye on the wake shape, in order to optimize the trim and squeeze the last half knot out my lake toys....

It is interesting though. Water is unusual in that it allows you to see the dynamics of a boat in a way that anything that passes through the air you cant.
