Victron BlueSolar MPPT controller problem.

Interesting. It sounds like it wasn't resetting to 12V when you did the "connect battery first" procedure.

Can you set the default to 12V with the dongle Paul, or is it only the cable which does that?

Richard

correct. I connected in the prescribed manner, and repeated it several times on the advice of Energy Solutions who sold it to me, but is seemed to think my 12V batteries were 24V for some reason.

The VE manual confirms that both cables and dongles provide the full communication link, allowing all the Settings options to be reset.

Thanks. I'm about to install my Victron but haven't bought a dongle or a cable ..... but your thread is making me think I should.

Richard

Maybe l am the only one who has had problems with the dongle. A few weeks ago it prompted me to do a firmware update. This failed halfway through and I had to send it back to the dealer to get reset. Now it has happened again and the same with the 702 battery monitor. So now niether work. Victron support suggested I buy a interface cable at £40 and try that. Just p**** off at the moment.

Paul,
I bought the VE.Direct to USB cable and connected. You were right, the mppt controller had set itself for 24V, now corrected.
For the life of me I cannot see how Victron can justify selling an item for about £80 without providing the means of communication (which cost me an extra £26) to reset the incorrect (default???) settings. I'll have to watch the other controller to see if it also needs resetting.
Thanks for your advice.

Glad to hear it all worked well for you. I agree there should be a way of checking/configuring settings without having to fork out for "extras".

When i first set my controller up it correctly set itself to 12v. A few days later i noticed my battery voltages were over 16v and a check in the controller settings showed it had somehow changed to 24v. Mine is now set to 12v manually.

I've updated the dongle several times and not had a problem. Do you have a stable internet connection at the boat ?

those symptoms match mine exactly.
very strange

It's sorted now. I used my phone rather than the tablet and it's updated fine. So probably the internet connection as you suggest. The last time it failed I was advised to send it back to the dealer, anyway I'm happier now.

Ah, always did mine via the phone. Glad you're sorted and happier :)

Richard, Have you installed the Victron yet? Everything OK? I've got battery problems at the moment and as well as replacing a couple, am looking at the 75/15 + cable as the cheap Chinese MPPT one I have can't be set to Trojan voltage parameters so undercharging. Graham.

I'm in the market as well - found a supplier down in Portugal? I've emailed one with apparently an office in Faro, any luck I'll give you a shout.

Also for others - victron MPPT - anyone know what the interface is? Looks like TTL as opposed to rs232?, trying to avoid spending on the bluetooth by talking to it from a Raspberry Pi but didn't come across anything definitive on the web. Ta.

Hi Paddy, not looked at Portuguese suppliers yet as they're always a rip-off. When are you back aboard? Maybe we could get some discount on ordering two and share a cable? Call in for beer when you're back, we're just going ashore now. Graham.

Cheapskate :)

I've got the Victron 75/15 and it works well. I did have the issue discussed earlier, where it changed to 24v somehow. Not sure what caused it, but since i manually set it to 12v and turned auto voltage sensing off it's been perfect. I think the cable or dongle are essential, it allows settings changes/customisation and shows you exactly what your panels are doing, as well as keeping a log of past activity. Well worth the cost, IMO.

Long story, but with various changes of equipment and laptops/tablets, i finished up with a dongle on the MPPT controller and a cable on the battery monitor. You can't use the dongle on Windows and my tablet got changed to a Windows tablet. This meant i could only see the controller on my phone, so i changed it to a cable and can now see both the controller and the monitor on my laptop and tablet.

Hi Graham

So far so good I think but I've only just got the dongle today so won't be able to try it on the boat for a few weeks.

I wrote up my first impressions on http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...xperiment-with-4-solar-panels-MPPT-controller but I only had a couple of days before we came home.

I think you mean £37.45 and that is really cheap and in stock. I'm surprised to see it priced as low as that.

Richard

£73.45 + delivery looks about right, battery megastore on amazon has it for "£68.25 + £7.50 UK delivery Only 3 left in stock - order soon. Sold by Battery Megastore"

Midsummer energy on amazon has them at £85.74 delivery to Portugal included.

Better than the €135 odd is was quoted locally.
