I know this has been done to death on a regular basis, but I plead two excuses:
1. The search facility is, shall we say, less than helpful.
2. New stuff's coming out all the time.

Jissel's VHF systems need replacing. The HH refused to transmit this weekend, and the fixed set, an aged beast, won't get QHM from Bembridge, so it's a new HH, masthead antenna, and probably fixed vhf.

The antenna simply needs to work - if only it were that simple! It'll go at the masthead.

The HH needs to be splash & rain-proof. Immersion-proof seems pointless unless it's also going to float, but performance, ease of use & battery life are important. Ideally, it should be rechargeable from 12V; mains would be a plus, but less important. A separate battery holder for alkaline cells seems a good idea for the grab bag.

The admiral will probably let me get away with a new VHF at the same time, so I think it's worth doing. The general consensus seemed to be that the Standard 1500 was one of the best about. Is that still the case? I’ll probably mount it in or on my removable instrument panel, which is outside but under the spray hood when at sea, and inside when in port. For this, I assume it’ll need to be at least shower proof. I take it home when I leave the boat for any length of time, so there will be an extra plug in the antenna lead, but I probably won't need a posh mike.

As with everything on Jissel, cost is important, but I don’t want cheap just ‘cos it’s cheap if a little dearer is a lot better.

What would you recommend or - just as important - not recommend, both for the kit and suppliers?

Thanks for your advice. On a bigger boat, I'd probably follow it, as I quite like the idea of AIS on my chart plotter. On Jissel, this would first mean buying an AIS compatible chart plotter, which I'd never get past the Admiral.

Use is mostly Solent pottering with the occasional longer trip and I'm hoping to have change from £250 for fixed, HH & antenna, though I'd stretch to a bit more if you can convince me, and more importantly the Admiral, it's worth it.

Standard Horizon GX-1500E

I bought the Standard Horizon GX-1500E because it has had good write-ups over the last year or so for good value for money.

I bought the extra remote mic for mounting in the cockpit.

Was all very simple to install.

Early days but I'm very happy so far.

you can have my vote for the Standard 1500. I've also the SH hand held as well. Both seem very good bits of kit at a reasonable price

Damn - too late to edit!

Over the last 12 months I've done the same as you plan. H/H is Standard Horizon E270 (I think). Waterproof up to a point, small and seems very good. This year I bought an Icom M421 fixed set. Also seems very good.
As my Magellan GPS doesn't have the right output for the DSC on the fixed VHF I also bought a GPS aerial from Icom. Whole lot, with aerial, came to about £260 and for the first time I have clear transmission / reception.
Icom radio has, I think, aquashake. Apparently it shakes itself to get rid of water if it gets wet. Mines in the cabin so I hope not to see that feature working!

my choice is icom, a real quality set, if you go for the m411 and icom 31 handheld, £30 to £50 for masthead antennae, you should have a couple of quid left for the can of beer you can celebrate with when you get to receive the coastguard loud and clear, maybe the first time in years... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
