VHF weirdness

If you've got a handheld and a fixed VHF, why don't you call yourself from a distance? One on each end should be able to figure out if it works. And you don't depend on others to check.
Or is this a bit over the top?

... but note this won't work for testing ch80 which is duplex. For that you'll have to wait until you find another marina operating on ch80.

I think this is illegal unless the mobile is "afloat" in the licensed vessels tender. I have done this when having a little explore up river in the dinghy.
