Heard the solent costguard ask people not to do radio checks on saturday, this is not strange in itself, but i had just locked through upper lode lock on the severn
which is in Tewkesbury, just north of gloucester! I only heard the 1 message frrom them, so i think i was in the right place at the right time!

Has anyone else have VHF funnies in this hot weather?

Not at all unusual to get freak reception in the sort of weather we've been having recently. All down to skip distances....bit like skimming stones across the water.

Sporadic \'E\'

Yes this is normal under intense sun conditions. It is called sporadic 'E' , and is a result of highly ionised pockets of gas in the troposphere which will act like lenses to incoming VHF radiation. The amount of skyward radiation from say Solent costguard,s antenna is quite high, such that it meets one of these ionised & sporadic pockets, and is refracted downwards, thus you can hear it in the Severn area. Sometimes these effects lasts for minutes or even hours.
They have the same effect on UHF TV signals, but it is more marked because of phase changes as it is refracted.

This effect, pre satellite comms, was used to communiate on VHF around the world, but used immense amounts of power to ionise the upper atmosphere. It was called troposcopic scatter.
Hope all this helsp to explain.
