Do you have to do the course every 5 years.?
I scanned the RYA pages, there doesn't seem to be a simple renewal application.

HATE exams.!

You have to re-validate your ships licence periodically.

10 years for a ship licence and 5 yrs for a portable ( "T") licence IIRC.
but any changes you make will automatically re-validate it

The provision exists on the Ofcom site to simply re-validate it

( my "T" licence must be due for re-validation)

Thx
I found my certificate now, as you say, no end date but the address is wrong.
ICC cert ran out 3 years ago, I don't suppose I will ever be able to afford that charter holiday in Greece, but should renew, just in case.!

VicS,

are you sure ? I thought they'd binned the Ships' license, hence the round stickers in cabin windows disappearing ( mine has ) ?

Will have to check this before I get 'disappeared' !

Not binned it, just changed its form from a tax disk to a bundle of paper you print out yourself from the Ofcom website. But you are supposed to carry it on board if you have a radio.

Crums you are a good few years behind the times

The old system under which you had to renew the licence every year was discontinued on 1 Dec 2006 in favour of "lifetime" licences.

If you had valid licence you would have been automatically sent a "lifetime" one when the system changed.

Since then it has been possible to make applications for new licences on line with no fee.

There is a requirement to re-validate the licence every 10 years.
Earlier I said this had to be done every 5 years for a Ship portable ("T" number) licence. That appears to be incorrect it's 10 years also.

Interesting that you mention the widow sticker. There were howls of protest when it was introduced ...... advertising to thieves that you had a VHF radio, although the aerial was a pretty good clue! ... and then nearly as many protests when it was discontinued.

Note that the Ship radio licences are not transferable between vessels or between indivduals. New boat or new owner both require a new licence although callsigns and MMSI will remain with the vessel to which they were originally issued.

The licence bit was easy enough but the 12 pages of terms and conditions that you are told to print out and keep with the licence are a bit of a bind, Mine got wet on the boat(couldnt laminate that much to carry) and I cant remember the details to get another copy.

Log on to OFCOM site using your access code, print it off, or download the PDF version for future reference.

You should get a list of your licences.

Click on view/print for the one you need to print.

When its up on the screen you can print it from the Print command in your browser/ PDF reader

Seems though that there is gremlin in the system. I can only display and print the first two pages of my Ship licence although I can display, and presumably print, all the pages of my "T" Licence.

But you can separately display the T&C from a menu on the LHS and you should then be able to print them separately

To keep on board I printed a copy out A5 instead of of A4 and just sealed in into a resealable plastic bag.

Double sided printing cuts down the amount of paper too

VicS,

not so much 'behind the times' as forgetful !

I have the lifetime license etc but like Chrissie found carrying a printout a pain, seems my limited brainpower had 'auto-deleted' something which is a bit of a pain !

Ta for the reminder.

Just to add, not for your benefit but as a general reminder .

In addition to amending the licence
Update your address, or email, in the "Your details" section of the Ofcom website if you move or change email.
I think Ofcom will use these to notify you of the need to re-validate the licence when necessary.

(Amending the licence will automatically re-validate it for a further 10 years)
