VHF Licence

Latest I heard was it was still not finalised and would be possibly delayed !!

Was supposed to be free from October if applied for online and downloaded and self printed but Nigel seems to have heard about delays

This is what is on the ofcom website
Summary
Full document

BrendanS believes many of us have mis intrpretted it all and that there is no quarantee that it will be free anyway.

We'll have to wait and see. Mine has lapsed but if it is free from October then I will be near the front of the queue to renew it

The way I understood it was the licence issued after the cut off date would be valid for so long as the details did not change, that is if you changed name of vessel or changed vessel then the licence would be void and you would need a new licence.

While not clear I also understood the "free" issue of a licence only applied to those few amongst us who actually have a valid licence at the cut off date.

I am probably reading too much into the documents - time for another glass....

Thats my understanding as well.

Cost for renewal now - £20
Cost for issue of lifetime license if existing license has lapsed - £20

The following is taken from a new memo on the Ofcom site dated 04/07/06:

1.3 Ofcom plans to introduce these new licences on 1 October 2006(-1-).

1.4 Ofcom will send by post these new licences, 6 weeks before the date when the old licences are due to expire but only to those licensees whose old licences expire on or after 1 October 2006(-1-). Any licences which expire before this date must be renewed with the RLC and will not be replaced with the new licence at that time.

Talbot, MedMan

Seems I actually understood the documents correctly although I still am not sure about the cost of a new licence (needed if one changes some details or even one's boat)

So all those waiting for a free" licence are waiting in vain?

Re: VHF Licence ... as I understood it ...

I noted during previous heated debates about this very subject - that many said - no fee for anyone if applied online ... regardless of whether lapsed or not. Unfortunately the page I had entered in fav's appeared to have been altered - so I couldn't argue.

One point that I read and darned if I can find now ... is that you will still have to complete online each year to continue the licence ... it may be lifetime - BUT subject to you verifying annually.

I heard rumours that Ratification by various departments had not gone through on time - meaning delay in implementing the proposed measures ... and that is the crux - as I understand it - all is still Proposed .....

Bit like Red Diesel in'it !!

It is free but only online from October 1

OFCOM have just told me that any existing licence holder coming up for renewal can decommision their set(s) and re-apply,ONLINE ONLY FOR FREE,but in this scenario they may be given a new call sign

Anyone wishing to add a handset to an existing fixed licence can do so for free after 0ct 1 providing it is done online

I wish someone from Ofcom would come in here and end this debate asap.
There seems to have been so many changes from what was first muted by Ofcom (Mike Martin).

I for one am still adhering to Mike's original quotes i.e.

If your licence falls due before Oct 1st 2006 then you pay £20 to renew after that you can renew online FOC.

If you let your licence lapse and decommission the equipment then you can renew online and it will be classed as a new licence so you pay a 1 off £20 but will get another call-sign - but reading the various posts here I am beginning to doubt that!

Never the less I hold 6 separate vhf licences for my clubs boats and I have renewed them all this year @ £20 a throw just so that I can keep the same call signs.

Peter.

If you read the Ofcom website there are a number of very clear statements which state the position from October - before then nothing has changed. There is a lot of misinterpretation and personal opinions given out here - get it from the horses mouth.

The new scheme is for the issue of licences. In future there will be no such thing as renewals. No where in the documents I have mentioned previously is there any suggestion of charging a fee (other than for issuing a licence non electronically)

In my case I allowed the licence to lapse several years ago because the boat was not in use. I will be applying for a licence in the same way as I would if I had only just bought the Vhf, or the boat. Whether or not I get the old call sign is not important. At present it is not guaranteed although it is possible if it has not been reallocated hopefully that arrangement will continue.

And mine runs out on September 26!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Has anyone tried to use the ofcom website...it is the worst site i have ever tried to use,,,, i won't even bother renewing if they cant even offer a good service. What are we paying for anyway??

If they get caught and successfully prosecuted they will be risking a fine of several £K (2 or 3 IIRC). Otherwise nothing.
