I'm being asked by Father Christmas what make/model of H/H VHF I'd like. Having spent some considerable time searching and appraising I'm narrowed down to two models.
Now.... I'm not going to get into the age old thread about which is best etc etc... but...
I've come across this ATIS spec that appears to be solely required on continental inland waterways. As I'd like to think I'll hang onto this vhf for some time and to make it as future proof as poss. I'm thinking I ought to get one with the ATIS capability. However...
I can only find one.. The Entel HT640 ATIS. Which ain't a great deal of choice!
Does anyone else have ATIS on thier handheld and if its not the above, what model is it? Also...
Is ATIS required at all? In practise that is? Has anyone got caught on this bit of eurobarb, and if so what happened?

Cheers
Cliff

A friend of mine who hopes to go to Holland has an Icom. This can be programmed for Atis apparently but can't be in this country because Ship's Radio Licensing have not yet made it legal for technicians to install-neither Channel 31 which is the Dutch Marina Channel. Total beaurocratic nonsense. I suggest you ring SRL or a specialist electronics supplier such as M.E.S. at Bristol and see if they can shed any light on the situation. Another possibility is to look at Dutch Chandlers' websites and see if Santa can pick a suitable HH on his way to your chimney! Or if not he might post one to you by mail order in exchange for some money for food for his reindeer. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

ATIS, we had it on our VHF (Marinfon in Dutch) when we bought the boat. I had to apply to the Dutch authorities to obtain a new ATIS No. for Freedom and then pay a bucket-load of €’s to have the unit re-programmed.

Unless you intend to travel extensively (years at least) in Europe don’t worry about it. We have NEVER been checked for any license, either operator’s certificates or boat registration in 5years travelling through France, Belgium, Germany, Holland.

I don’t think that ATIS is mandatory for the boats Marinfon over here and almost certainly not for hand-held portables, which you can always hide in the oven if anyone comes aboard to check!

One of the mags (PBO or YM) is reviewingf HH VHF next issue.I am waiting for their compara\tives and will see what deals are available.

With ATIS also a lot of channels must be reduced in power to 1 Watt automatically. Also dual watch and a few other features are not allowed in the Netherlands (where I live) on a handheld.
I'am thinking of buying a HX270 with 2 channels sets, one with ATIS en power reduction and the other set without ATIS with all features and without power reduction.
A dealer can program this.
