VHF For Rib

Hi

Looking for a non-gps/DSC vhf for the sailing club ribs.

As we are inland based we do not need the GPS or DSC features.

If the "red" button isn't there then no one can press it by mistake.
If you mean a fixed set I’m not sure you’ll find one especially not well waterproofed and from one of the main manufacturers, nor saving any money. It’s really not possible to accidentally press the red button - and whilst unlikely it might just have some advantage:
- if you have two rescue boats out, a serious issue and short of people you can press red button whilst multitasking
- if your boats will ever accompany your fleet on tour to neighbouring clubs

If you actually meant handheld - which is what lots of clubs use for their safety boats - then either Icom or Standard Horizon have a good reputation. Make sure they are all the same, and ideally what your crew are already familiar with mixing sets is a recipe for confusion especially if using the “club” channels which different sets call M/N/P1/2.

Hand held VHF radio's are easily obtainable without DSC, but not easy to buy fixed station VHF sets. Personally I would not worry about accidentally pressing the DSC button if a fixed station is what you want, as all users must be licenced or supervised by a licensed person. Training will include DSC function as well as DSC function being guarded on the set, and requiring a 5 second hold to activate.

Can you use marine band radios inland?
Normally the inland clubs have a special Coastal Station (Marina) licence and safety boats operate under that licence on UK only M1 and M2 channels. (And as those channels are not ITU regulated international channels, don't need an operator's certificate)

As such the boats don't usually have an MMSI - so not sure what the red button would do.
