Is it ok to use the external speakers avaiable for car type radios with my VHF set?
I was going to buy a pair and connect one to the VHF and one to the FM radio.
thanks

They will be OK, so long as they are the correct impedance. (Usually 8 or 4 ohm). The handbook will tell you which your equipment needs.

I use a car phone speaker (about 4inch x 2inch)and just plug it into the VHF and pop it under the spray hood when sailing
I opened up the speaker enclosure streched cling film across the speaker and refitted the enclosure it works very well been in use for about 4 years now and was very cheap.

Mmmmmmm. Reading the other replies has made me re-think my reply.

If you are planning to use the speakers down below (which is what I had assumed you meant in your posting) then fine. If you want to use them in the cockpit then probably not. They won't like salt water.

I've recently fitted a small speaker in my cockpit for my VHF. A mylar cone speaker, behind a vent to keep the water off. It cost the grand total of £3 and the sound quality is far, far better than the speaker in the radio. The hard bit was gritting my teeth and drilling a hole in the fibreglass! However I doubt if the quality would be good enough for broadcast radio.

I'm about to fit car speakers down below. More holes to cut!

Maplins do a suitable waterproof speaker.

while you're at it, fit a switch in the line so you can have it on down below without broadcasting to the rest of the marina!

It is quite reasonable to couple both radio outputs to one speaker. You might however like to have a switch to disconnect the FM radio if you are trying to copy a message. regards will

The one I use on our dive club rib is a cb radio PA speaker, made of plastic, made to be in the weather, works fine, very clear, and they are cheap.
