hi all a friend of mine has a vetus m206 tmc40 (he gave me the numbers so i,m not sure which is the model no.)and he dicovered yesterday that it has no thermostat fitted,so of he went and got a new one, this is when i arrived,he said he would fit it and that may sort out the white smoke that comes out from the exhaust at about two thousand revs,so i asked few more questions like does it overheat, yes but only when under load in a big tide and times like that ,was the oil clean or white no its clean but just recently oil has been found in the bilge so the question is if you can help, does the engine have a fault or shoild he just go ahead and fit the new thermostat, thanks.Kieron

Not really enough detail for anyone to diagnose - but if it ain't broke... The engine is a Vetus M206, the gearbox option is the TMC40. This is a marinised version of a pretty bullet-proof Mitsubishi industrial engine. It's likely that the missing thermostat has been playing havoc with the engine temperatures, slow to warm up and, depending on the design of the bypass, could run hot or cold once warmed through. It's good news that the oil looks OK, but worth looking for the leak if there is one. Bear in mind that a lot of oily bilges are from spills when filling!
