Could someone please tell me where I can get a reasonably priced heat exchanger for my Vetus M2.05 10 hp engine . Ive heard some nightmare stories on prices
Firstly what sort of heat exchanger is it, it's either the waffle type or tube. Waffle ones are not fixable, however tube ones are. If you take it out and take to a local radiator specialist they'll clean it, test it and if it's tube fix it. Look for a little local place rather than the biggies, my waffle type Volvo ones were £ 25 cash in 'and gov, stonkin' great Perkins intercooler & oil cooler stack was £ 60!
Volvo 140A petrol core which is Waffle is £ 500 to buy and as I say not fixable.
Sorry, can't anwser your question, but was interested why you needed to replace it. I took mine apart for cleaning last year as it was 11 years old and was surprised at the good condition inside. A littel clean through and new O-rings and it went back on the engine.
When I went to the 2001 LBS I stopped by the VETUS stand, we at the time had one of these fitted in the port hull. The heat exchanger had rotted by the outlet so the fresh water was washing out with the sea water and the engine would over heat.
We had sailed many seasons with me in the engine room attempting all sorts of new and fangled patch up jobs. When I took over the boat I decided enough was enough and I would look for a new exchanger. About £600.00 I was quoted without going into part and engine details, this was the best case scenario. As the engine needed other work as she had been laid up a while I decided to go for finance and got two matching yanmars. Better anyway for the much lower wieght in a catamaran.
Repairing one of these exchangers might be a big problem as they are alloy construction, and from experience, nothing, even aircraft spec gasket compounds sticks to the stuff. Time to air the wallet. I managed to sell the engine, I think the guy was going to convert to direct cooling.
Thanks for the responses. I believe Vetus will supply one as you say at £650. I have had it apart to clean several times and had it welded up twice. It is of the tube stack variety and I think this is where the problem may lie.on this occasion I will go and talk to my local radiator specialist and see if it is repairable with solder. The engine is very good so it would be tragic to not use it. Shocking spares price without a doubt !!!!!!!!!
Im also investigating Bowman in Birmingham for a cheaper option
