Vetus bow thruster "SPARKING"

Can anybody help.
Vetus bow thruster throwing sparks out of the air vent casing. Every time I hit the truster button a mass of sparks fly out and smoke ( I think from oil set smouldering from the sparks)
Someone said about new brushes but I don't know. Thruster still works but need to stop the sparks.
Any ideas anyone.

I would be looking at the condition and degree of wear of the brushes and also the state of the commutator.
