I'm looking for a small quantity of polished A4-306 SS sheet less than 1mm thick, 0.5mm if I can get it. I'd also prefer a low carbon SS alloy so it's bend easily.

I only need a few bits around 100m x 50mm to act as protection for the gell coat in areas where the gell coat gets abraded by rope.

I'm happy to buy a bigger sheet (max around 300mm x 300mm) and cut to size using a Dremel.

I've looked online and although I can find several offerings, I remain unconvinced that they are what I'm looking for.

Before I take a punt with an unknown supplier, has anyone bought thin SS sheet recently from a supplier they could recommend?

Your metallurgy is a bit rusty :) A4 is 316, not 306. Carbon content has no effect on the strength or hardness of 300 series stainless steels but 316L is a little more corrosion resistant. What they all do is work harden rapidly, so when bending you need to do it in one go rather than with successive small bends as you might do with mild steel, At the thickness you are looking for it probably won't take much effort anyway.

Quite a lot of the thin sheet on Ebay is aimed at domestic splashbacks and is probably 304 or even 400 series. Don't buy any for your use unless you know it to be 316 at least. I would try Metals4U.

You can get these ready-made, with neat radiussed corners - http://www.techstainless.com/plates-chafe-pads

I am no fan of these self adhesive wear pads having had one come unstuck and slightly raised unnoticed.

I lost a completeley skinned a knuckle down to the bone on my hand when I just brushed it over the raised edge as i was pulling on a sheet.

I didnt feel a thing as the edges are sharper than any razor blade.....

Converted the cockpit into an aboutoir for a while....

Have you ever arrived in port and had to explain what looked like a murder scene?

Avoid...

Vyv Cox is generally considered pretty dependable in such matters, so some evidence to support your contention that he is utterly ignorant would significantly help your case.

He was referring to the previous poster who claimed that 304 would rust away, so the observation is correct - although it would have been better if he had referenced the specific post!

Oh, I thought he was self-referencing, Tranona:
Utter, ignorant nonsense!

You'd have thought that anyone with such strong views on sovereignty would have a rough idea which sovereign state they lived in.
