It's all such a waste of money and what kind of a world do we live in when you are forced to apply for nothing.
Last year the IR tried (un-successfully) to fine me a 100 quid because I had forgotten to tell them that I didn't owe them any money, them having first told me I didn't owe them anything!
And they wonder why the general population has no confidence in politicians and civil servants,,,,Dahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
If she doesn't need the loan money to live off and all her expenses are going to paid by the parents, the measily profit that would be made by putting the loan in an isa won't exactly be worth the hassle!
If the parents actually *need* to borrow the money, then they obviously aren't in a situation to subsidise all her living costs, so she's going to need it to live.
I agree that the proffit is meagre and that there is the hassle of claiming the loan, although, from what I am reading it is more problematic not claim the loan.
We have found that the system proposed by JHR, myself and others does work for us. The incentive of having his loans discharged on graduation has kept my son within budget, which is more than can be said for some of his mates. The money is saved and thus available in the event of any "emergency".
My wife and I are currently well able to support our children through university, however, with the uncertainty of business income (particularly when associated to the manufacturing sector) this scheme does provide a degree (sorry, no pun intended) of flexibility.

If you think this is a problem, try not having a TV set and thus no need for a licence! In the years when we did not have a TV we were pursued weekly by these missives threatening dire consequences if we did noy buy one. Letters and phone calls explaining we had no TV were to no avail! Eventually a friend of mine suggested I write to the Managing Boss of TV licences suggesting he sack his IT guru because he had failed to alter his Reminder programme to take account of non TV owners. That did the trick!
However a recent patient of my wife recounts that he is being repeatedly pursued by the TV licence people despite not having a TV. Perhaps they have reinstated the guru or perhaps he's the same one the Student Loan Company employ!
By the way, we now have a purchased a TV (and a licence!) because we won a Video Recorder in a competion, but had no TV to record from or play to. Has proved a pretty useless win though-no programmes worth recording most of the time.
My son who never seems to watch TV at all, was almost taken to court by the TV maniacs.
In digs at Wolverhampton Uni. he got a letter from TV licensing saying that he had a TV but no license! Now the lad is well into Music & books so he politely replied that he had no TV, never had a TV & would never buy a TV.
He then got another letter stating that he would be visited by the Bulldogs to check up on his digs. As it happens he was at a lecture but the landlord was visiting the house.
Very Very unfortunately my lad shared the house with some other students. but I would stress that he had his own room upstairs. They of course had a Tele downstairs in the common living room/kitchen.......!!!
Mr Bulldog went away according to the Landlord with steam & a lot of verbal abuse.
Poter junior got a court summons, it was only after I got the family Solicitor on to the case that it eventually went away, but only after a year or so & it had cost some 2.5 K.
By the by can I recover the money from the Government?
After all the problems the lad went onto London U to do his Ph D & this time made sure his flatmates had a licence. BUT he still got a letter as the landlord was an upstanding citizen & did his tax returns (I thought there was confidentiality of private data?) This again took a solicitors letter threatening human rights abuse etc etc. to stop the IT twats sending their abusive missives.
And to think I live here & pay thousands of pounds in direct Tax to this crap government!...
Probably, if you sign up to a University course to do your VHF SRC. How about trying Plymouth? I should think it goes alongside their "Surf Studies" degree course. Or why not join the R.N.Reserve and you'll probably be paid to do it at my and other taxpayers' expense?
