Hello, I am writing from the US and would like to contact a Vertue owner in the UK to arrange a bareboat charter for a Laurent Giles Vertue for a week or 10 days in Mid August, for some local coastal cruising in the UK.

My wife and daughter in law will be hiking across England on the Coast to Coast trail during that time, and as my trekking days are done, would like to charter a Vertue for some day sailing and coastal cruising while they are out walking.

I can provide references and details of my 45 years sailing and commercial fishing experience in the North Pacific, and would be happy to qualify my boat handling skills as needed.

Thanks very much for assistance you might be able to offer.

Highly unlikely you will find a Vertue for charter. A private owner is not able to charter a boat without it complying with the law by being coded for commercial work. This process is expensive and not easy to achieve with such a boat. Your only hope is that an owner will let you use the boat free of charge.

There was at one time an agency that represented a number of owners who could charter older boats but it seems to have disappeared, probably because there is only very limited potential demand.

Suggest you contact Classic Boat magazine as they run regular features on chartering so will know what is available that might suit you.

Thanks all, I did email the Vertue Owners Association. Alas, they aren’t active as a club any longer, but The web site owner is scouting around for me.

Also have received a reply from a charter boat operator, for another type classic, so another possibility.

Very nice craft at classic sail.com. And at 4.5k pounds sterling per week it would indeed be memorable!

Thanks much for your prompt replies and assistance.

Why not just buy a vertue, sail it and then put it back on the market?

There are at least 5 for sale right now. I would probably go for V6 she's on wooden ships.

The fact that there are 5 on the market is an indication that there is limited demand for such boats. Perhaps not a good idea to go through all the hassle of buying a boat, using it for a holiday and then the hassle of selling it afterwards.

Yes, thanks all. I’ve thought about buying a Vertue and reselling. But after 45 years sailing and happily retired ashore messing around building and restoring 1/4 scale miniature steam locomotives, don’t have the bandwidth to own yet another boat. Hence would love to charter, rent, borrow a Vertue for a week or so, just to satisfy my lifelong admiration of this design. Vertues are scarce here in the US, and as luck would have it, Salmo is for sale on the West Coast at the moment - San Diego, Ca area - for a decent price. Which I purposefully have not gone to look at, as it would be a terrible Temptation.

If nothing else, perhaps I will approach one of the boat owners in August when we are in the UK and arrange for a “demonstration” sail for a few days.

Surely the brilliant thing about wooden boats is that you could scrap it once you are finished with it, unlike old GRP ones.

Yikes, I understand scrapping a Vertue falls somewhere between heresy and high treason. Depending on where one lives Punishments can range from banishment in purgatory to being burned at the stake.
