Venus for navigation

What surprises me - looking back - is how many 'professional navigators' knew as much as they had needed to pass their tickets and no more.
IIRC the moon was dropped from the British MN deck officer nav syllabus when it switched to the international STCW standards, along with a few other things that I can not remember now. There were mutterings at the time about the STCW system being of a lower level.

About three years ago my son did his Yachtmaster ocean in Australia and he used a sighting of Venus for his exam. The examiner was tickled pink as it was the first time the he has seen anyone do that in a YM exam.

(His YM exam was quite interesting, he rescued a single handed yachtsman who had fallen overboard from an unrelated boat, and said to the examiner "That man's in trouble" about 30 seconds before he fell over the side.)
