Vendee Globe and Alex Thomson / Hugo Boss

Apivia seems to be slower these last few hours than I would expect in the conditions, and has now gybed onto a somewhat unexpected heading.

To keep out if the exclusion zone

He's about 200m north of exclusion zone - I would expect him to push further south. If the displayed heading is correct he is heading into lighter wind areas. Anyway only another hour to next update so will see then...

Looks like Apivia has gained most from the St Helena high. Likely to have + or - 400 miles lead by the time Ruyant and Le Cam get down to the sleigh ride. Then they (Ruyant and Le Cam) will have the pack chasing them so likely to be overtaken at some point unless Ruyant has managed to fix his broken foil.

It's beyond repair, they are debating whether to cut it away or not. It's still giving some lift but they are worried if it breaks away it could cause considerable damage.

Alex had his foot off the gas again today - presume he has/had still not managed to complete the repairs.

Louis Burton is on a charge - could be one to watch.

Is it just me?

If they had been set an unrealistic target the designer should have stated 'it will break' they are the professionals. The builder should build what the designer states -- he may question with experience.

I personally appreciate Alex's attitude - never give in, the race is not lost until it is won. I am not interrogating weather or tactics, looking at SOG and positions with fingers crossed - Alex deserves some luck (Good) The worst (Southern Ocean) is yet to come.

But then I sail a medium to Heavy Displacement Cruiser.

Do you remember Team Philips?

Now that repairs are finished, I guess some of us want to see AT go after Apivia.

In the 1700 reports, we hear that AT has the highest 30min average, so he is fast again.
I t would be great to see just how fast HB can now go.

But lets not forget that in '16, AT was around 800Nm behind LeCleach at Cape Horn.
Hes only 640Nm behind right now, and they are not even at the CoGH..
So I dont see AT pushing too hard over the next week or so...

But lets see.

Allez Alex, Allez Sam.
Keep pushing on Pip and Miranda...

Are you making these assessments from live weather reports at their location of weather predictions from windy/predict wind or similar?

It was further repairs ahead of the (now) higher winds:-
Team Update: Preparing for the Southern Ocean - The Hub

But that was yesterday - at the 2pm stats today (Friday) he was only doing 7 knots in good wind conditions and others around him were doing at least double. He should be doing 400-500 miles a day and has done less than 300 in the last 24 hours so hope they haven't found more issues as this time yesterday we were told he had completed the repairs.

20.9kts and 64Nm in 4 hours at the last report (1700 UT)
