Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Having just exteded the Remora model 168hrs, which shows both HB and BP having to sail way north of Les Sables (BP towards Pen Marche and HB almost into the Channel) before tacking south to avoid holes and North Easterlies in the Bay of Biscay, I would say there are deffinitely plenty of options way up to the finish for either getting things just right or horribly wrong!
The fat lady has yet to sing!

Having seen the past few days, I dont trust Remora at all. I really dont believe they will have to go that North. But Beyou might be able to have a shorter journey.

Well it is the best we have access to. It is a complex model and weather by its nature is fickle and then there are the localised variations within it. But your signature tells me you do not need me to tell you that.

I note that Conrad should be rounding the Cape around the next data set 0700 GMT

Have not seen the data, but you do have to wonder if he has lost one of his big reaching headsails?

Well situation is much the same this morning, but I feel sure there is nowt much wrong with Alex's boat the data set captured him doing 20+ knots at GMT. With 6 days remaining Alex needs to be covering 45 to 50 miles more each day than Armel to see him in his 'wing mirrors' at the finish. Remora suggests 18th January for the leader to finish.

Conrad has another couple of hours to Horn it.

yes, that is reassuring to see those speeds back on the dial

Am I missing something?
All three leaders seem to be continuing to head northwards to a calm.ish "hole" whereas there are good winds (strength and direction) nearer the land to the east.

On a brighter note, Alex has clawed back 40nm :)
The grib winds are not correct. The actual winds for the area show no hole.

Is this the ultimate selfie?

Conrad has visitors, at the Horn:

"In such a lonely point on the planet it was strange to be standing on deck and then see the dark shape of a huge trimaran emerge from the mists. It was Idec Sport, a massive 100 foot trimaran that left France on December 16th 2016 in pursuit of the Jules Verne Trophy, the prize for the fastest nonstop circumnavigation of the globe. I have several friends onboard and it was an odd feeling to run into my buddies and swim training partners so far from home, but then where else would you find French ocean racers?! They are well ahead of the record time and going well so I wish them well, even if they will be home and dry weeks before me!"

It certainly looks contrary for the two up front. Armel is currently making 3 knots at 073 with Alex at 9 knots due North!!!!!!

Now this just got very exciting. Taken at least 100 miles off Armel in last 24 hours and like you say, Armel currently heading to Africa. Now if Alex just manages to find a little corridor around......

I suspect that if Armel considers it appropriate to head east, then there is a good reason and therefore I assume Alex will have to do something similar.

On the other had, perhaps Armel has a problem?.....................

Don't wish him any harm BUT  !!

COME ON Alex

At 3.6 knots that just reads like he's in a hole and just trying to keep the boat moving in any direction vaguely towards home that he can.

It's the light stuff that gives Alex the opportunity to get at Armel. If he can stay in breeze, and that's a great big if, then he could be breathing down his neck quite soon.

I think you still have to expect Armel to come out on top here though, this is where the Figaro experience will show through...

But either way, what a race this has been!
