Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I am sure they will be looking forward to getting out of their heavy foul weather gear and into lighter stuff and warming up a little.

Alex now under 400 miles behind Armel and on a far better course also.

Moving the wind on it appears to be in AT's favour so hopefully that deficit will be cut even further

I know there is a long way to go and things will change but the group from 10th to 15th could be worth watching at the finish. 12000 miles gone and still less than 100 miles between six boats! Come on Enda, you can do it!

With no disrespect to AT

There is an old joke, best told by Brits

What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages

= trilingual

What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages

= bilingual

What do you call a person who speaks one language

= an Englishman.

Guilt as charged, though I'm from Scotland - same ideas apply.

Though Americans and Australians also fit.

There are other languages than French. But its a joke, relax.

But its so much better when we mock ourselves.

Jonathan

Well, okay - French is the relevant language here hence my mention - and now your back-pedal? ... and you weren’t actually mocking yourself if you’re Scottish? I think that this thread, and the whole JV2016 deserve and demand somewhat better spirit - and definitely better jokes? No harm done... let’s move on...

Sorry if it upset.

I've been following the JV for only three races. Its an extraordinary event, participated by some very extraordinary people. But it would not work without the excellent coverage and feed, that has got better race by race, from the organisers who make it into a 'live' event, or as close to live as you can get in an armchair. If more yacht racing was this exciting it would be a much bigger sport. I'm getting two automatic updates a day from Presse VG, charts, video links, daily images, interviews - and this is supplemented by feed from you guys (for which thanks).

Jonathan

I must say that I have become hooked. Although pinned to my bed with a streaming cold[ normal for Christmas], I find myself checking the VG on both available sites each time I awake and have a coughing fit. The coverage has become mesmerising and so improved.
I can remember the early efforts at reporting dinghy racing in advance of the 2012 Olympics, and thinking what a lot of tosh, but...... Now we have almost constant coverage from the furthest and remotest part of the planet, with instant weather forecasting thrown in.
The dramas out there in all areas are fantastic and if only the General public could understand a little more about sailing........... It beats snooker or darts any day.

And all at speeds we could all wish for on our own boats.

I am also so impressed with the Australian coverage of the Sydney Hobart. but belongs to another thread.

Yes, amazing coverage and I am totally stuck to it too, mostly checking the app on a regular basis. I thought AT had it in the bag a while ago and then he lost the wind and I was just hoping that he would hold onto second. But now it's all on again! Go Alex. Having finishing the last race after crossing biscay with no keel, he deserves this. But i do worry that he will upset the French, winning their race!

If he wins it will be such an upset that they will simply have more and better coverage + any meagre increase in coverage from the UK (and anywhere else). It will only do the VG good. What the race really needs are a few more foreigners, non French, so again a win from outside France would be excellent PR.

What does surprise me is that Hugo Boss do not make more of it - but maybe I don't look in the right places. I'm also surprised its Hugo Boss and not Musto, HH or even Nike - as sailors are not normally renowned for sartorial elegance. But again maybe I move in the wrong circles.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, it's a long thread, but was it just me or did anyone else think that the military helicopter stunt almost blew AT flat? Btw, I love the French, well many of them, but sport is sport in any country.
