Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I see J-P Dick went into the ice exclusion zone and he to retrace his steps and exit at the point of entry - cost him quite a lot of time
I used the race viewer and measuring tool. He sailed an extra 100 miles or so. I havn't sailed that far this season!!
He did not seem to lose his placing.

I would love to be able to replay some parts of the race in close-up. Trouble is, the replay has to span the entire fleet, which makes close-up impossible.

All power to Alex but there is drama going on at the back too.

Awesome...

(I'm guessing the x on the bottom of the hull is the point where rescuers would cut to gain access to cabin, if the boat was upturned?)

Obviously the hull of Thomson's boat is optimised for speed and is very fast. It was noticeable on the video that occasionally the bow went under and the perception was that the boat slowed quite a bit before accelerating as she shook off the water. The trim when she was going flat out was also very obvious with just the middle section of the hull touching the water with the bow and stern clear. Most of the time the boat was lifting on the wave at this trim point and the bow was over the crest of the next wave. It would be great to see how the design thoughts / process around the hull in relation to all the water and wave variables is managed to come up with what they think is the most efficient shape.

As others have said, a great race.

Another retirement: Spirit of Yukoh suffered mast damage, the mast broke at the second spreader and is deemed not repairable. He is going to head for Cape Town and is in no immediate danger.

That's a shame. He climbed his mast only a few days ago to fix some of the instruments...

Alot of instruments up there. It's Alex Thomsons old boat.

That's a bit like buying a second hand car off Lewis Hamilton.... Yes Sir, one careful owner Sir....... I mean, would you!

This is shaping up to be, if it already isn't, one of the best races ever. Good luck to the pair of them, as long as they both survive I'm not really that bothered which one wins.... well maybe just a little bit!

I'm following Conrad Coleman on Facebook. He's put up some quite spectacular footage of his boat sitting on her beam ends after what looks like a nasty spinnaker wrap. It was amazing how the boat just sat there on her wide, like a giant dinghy. He got up and moving again so I hope the sail wasn't damaged.
