Vendée Globe 2016-2017

2 nm apart now at 11h00. Armel has the faster boat speed aswell. Both must be pushing like crazy at the moment but I expect Armel to be ahead at 14h00s update. You can see why they call him the Jackal.

I think the current duel is coming down to a case of finding the best wind as they try and dodge the holes. Hugo Boss has proved to be about equal to Banque Populaire, even without the starbord foil for much of the last two weeks. BP's gain has been largely due to relative wind strength.

It would appear that, with the current southerly race limit, the Southern Ocean may not be the fast and furious downwind sleigh ride that has been seen in previous Vendees and, being a more northerly route. the race will be much more tatical as they have to negociate the centers of the depressions.

I don't know if I'm missing something in WindyTV, but the large map isn't a forecast is it?

If I'm right, you could try https://forecast.predictwind.com/atlas/#Wind - I'm sure there are plenty of others, but it's one that I've tried and got used to.

AnOccasionalYachtsman.... The VG / WindyTy overlay I am using is at the link below and does have the wind forecast scroll bar at the bottom. I have noticed however that if your browser window is not big enough, the forecast wind scroll bar does disappear. Perhaps try full screen or a different browser.

I don't think so, they are on port and Alex is just slower on that tack.

I think if I was Alex Thomson I would tack north look at the predictions on windy tracker he would then be able to get on starboard until he is past New Zealand.

I think both will sail down the ice limit looking at the next 12 hours - Alex will have a little more wind to begin with.

Third place is now at least a days sail behind!

I am feeling sorry for those dozen guys back at 15d West who have been punching into headwinds for the last few days, and have a zone of light variables in front of them.
Alan Roura in La Fabrique and a couple of others, has himself south of the variables, and may do a big catch-up in a zone of westerlies.

Thanks for pointing me towards that, it's a lot better than without the overlays. I think I still prefer the weather presentation in PredictWind, but it's less useful for watching the Vendee.

2 knots slower on port tack. Sounds like Alex needs to stop his boat and whip out the angle grinder. I'm guessing that stump shouldn't take too long to cut off.

Hopefully lots of starboard tack coming up which will allow him to get back up there.

Not getting much news from Alex T. He may already have done that when he was down to 5 or 6 knots. The lack of news from him is intreguing.

Update from Alex today/tonight. This man really deserves a medal..

Completely agree and makes you wonder when the inevitable footballer wins SPOTY ....what personality? Vain, money grabbing self obsessed ....I could go on! By contrast, it takes real personality and resilience to do what Alex and the others are doing. BTW am loving these very upbeat updates from Alex and thanks for posting the link, as I'm struggling to find them myself. This really is Britains best shot at success. Go Alex, Go :)

2 knots slower on port tack.

From what it seems, he only really loses out when the water is flat and wind in the 18-22 range. Once it starts getting windy and the waves build, as it is now again, he is able to stay in touch or better. Go Alex!
