Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Subscribe to their e-mail service and you will have all the updates...

This is the one race I take any interest in. One day I hope to set off the day after them and follow them round - the distance getting greater and greater between them and me every day.

If you are talking about wish lists I would like to start off a day later than them - and beat them...

I'm wondering how they avoid traffic when sleeping - I'm guessing they have AIS and radar onboard?

Also interested in the skippers sleeping patterns - guessing something like 30 minutes on 30 minutes off sort of thing?

According to some interviews given by the skippers, they sleep in between 3 to 6 hours a day but not more than 15-30 min at a time in busy waters. They have AIS and radar. The issue being that not everybody is using AIS (especially fishing vessels who dont want their position to be known by competitors)...

I've heard speculation, in France, that some of the previous accidents were engineered by fishing skippers to get big payouts.

Alex Thomson in P1 as per latest update.....................

Although it's only by a few miles, it looks like the three hares have laid down their markers. My virtual money is still on Vincent Riou. I don't think the foils will make it.

Wondering about that... but I agree, it will be interesting to see whether the foils are robust enough to last in those conditions.

Never heard this before. If that's the case, then I think it's pretty stupid considering you might well end up feeding the crabs at the bottom of the sea considering the sea conditions.

Most of the reports from training and testing seem similar. They have tested the foils, something broke, foil or hull, it's been fixed/reinforced. After this process I don't think anyone has had the chance to do enough testing.
It looks to me like the weather today may favour the leading boats. I think the wind may drop by the time many of them get to Finisterre.
Only 24000ish miles to go!

Wondering what is Alex doing... doesn't help that the app keeps on crashing and that we don't have much data regarding the winds. Anybody got a clue?

I'm finding the website a bit carp and cannot install the app without updating my OS... any *simple* ways of following this?

Looks like he has changed from the Rhum Line to be east of the Azores High. Could be a good move!

Hope so - no one appears to be covering the move at this point. He's doing over 20 knots whilst most others are in the low teens although he is losing out due to lower VMG
