Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Alex has made his tack to the North East for a 2 hour run before getting back on a course to hit the finish line which the model indicates he should achieve by 0700 tomorrow morning (20th). He is currently 75 NM from the finish.
An earlier rise for me, rather than a late night. 07:00 much more gentlemanly than 02:00. Thank you Alex ;)

What a fight he has put up. I hope the elation and satisfaction he gets when he crosses the line matches the effort and determination he has shown throughout.

Excellent coverage on the live youtube broadcast, astonishing it peaked at not much more than 6k viewers, though there were probably substantially larger numbers on some other platforms.

I expect the organisers, sponsors and waiting crowds were delighted with the timing, was quite the spectacle I thought. Wonderful scenes and thoroughly deserved plaudits for Armel who was rather overcome at one point.

Having consumed as much as I could throughout the event, I can't quite shake the feeling that some of those involved could be doing a lot more in promoting the event and the coverage, nevertheless I enjoyed it immensely and gained huge respect for what these guys put themselves through.

A staggering feat deserving of wider recognition (outside of France?)
It was of course live on tv in France. It is very big in France, but only in France, I'm afraid.

Let's hope he can snatch a few spells of shut eye and doesn't pick up any pots.

I gather he will be allowed three hours of kip after crossing the line, before he is escorted to the marina. I'll wager he'll be dead to the world. I suppose he'll be using matchsticks to keep his eyes open until the line.
Amazing stamina.
I wonder what was the UFO in the Atlantic on the way out? Will we ever find out?

Well done Alex, second place is a magnificent achievement.
07:00hrs estimated to the finish (at 2330Hrs)

Bring her home, Alex, and good on you. Can't help but feel that with two intact foils he'd have won.

Ah well, c'est la vie :) Chapeau, Le jackal

Fantastic race and far from over yet, the rest of the fleet deserve our continued support and interest too

I will admit that as a non English person it was indifferent for me whether Alex or Armel wins.
Armel is a undoubtedly a super great sailor and Alex, is a great sailor too but most of all what a really nice and cool guy he is.

Well done to both.

Well done Alex!

He could have won it, wouldn't have been undeserved to be honest.
There is still a part of me thinking that Armel might be more careful when it comes to his boat and maintaining it. Maybe something to work on. But he had the fastest boat, and us been such a colourful character! Very impressed by his performance, especially for the last few days.
