Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Round up

Armel predicted to finish 19/1 at 1600 with Alex to finish 20/1 at 0200 ( 10 hours behind). He is really suffering from the lack of foil, not only in speed but also because he is slipping to leeward, unless he can make more easterly he is going to lose around 2 hours tacking, to gain traction for the final run to the finish

Jeremiah Beyou (3rd ) has around three days to go to finish
Yann Eliese and Jean Le Cam (now 4th and 5th) have fluked Jean Pierre Dick (now 6th but might be temporary) and stolen a march on him.

Louis Burton is now North of the Equator making that 7 of the 18 competitors now in the Northern hemisphere.

Fabrice Amedo (11th) and the group of 4 with Rich Wilson (14th) are, I expect enjoying champagne sailing conditions, in approx 47S and getting plenty of rest (unlike Armel and Alex).

Didac Costa (15th) is leading his group towards the Horn and they should be around in about 36 hours leaving just 3 of the field in the Pacific.

The rear marker Sebastian Destremeau has a mere 9,500 miles to the finish, must be quite dispiriting for him especially once he gets the news feeds of the winner celebrations.

Yes, I feel for Sebastian D (and the others who have dropped-out and others who are still have a long way to the finish).
Tough for the guys at the front, but it takes real steel to keep going when so far behind.

Well done Rich Wilson & Co - I hope they enjoy the Champagne!!

The Daily Telegraph online edition has today run this article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...e-record-breaking-triumph-worlds-toughest-row. I would not wish to suggest that these guys are not worthy of praise; however, not to cover the Vendee on the winners day and the achievments of Armel, Alex and the rest and so ignoring an extra ordinarily courageous British single handed sailor who has been at sea longer and probably slept less than these rowers is shameful INMHO. Maybe tomorow something will be written!

There is a convent at Les Sables d'Olonne. The nuns are supporting Sebastian Destremeau...!!

They are bringing step ladders to the finish to be sure of getting a view.

I assume this has lost something in translation, or is the right choice of spice that important?
"Meanwhile, Alan Roura has also been forced to make repairs after hitting an unidentified floating object in the water, damaging his starboard rudder and causing a leak.

The 23-year-old Swiss skipper managed to change the saffron and stem the waterway and has resumed course."

I think that incident was a few weeks ago.

Rowing is good working class stuff while luxury yachting around the world is elitist and for the rich upper classes only (Unless he had won).

Edit: where the Telegraph is concerned, there may well be an issue over how much the sponsors spend on advertising. Big spend means good coverage and vice versa.

All minority sports seem to be ignored.
Brits are currently in first and second place in the World Gliding Champs (open class) and third in 18mtr class with just two days left of the comp. Not a mention anywhere.

I could not access the Telegraph article directly as it is a corrupt link - I will search it out later.
However, rowing will not be perceived as a 'working class' sport by the vast majority where envy politics colours every aspect of life and opinion.
