Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I fear you could be right, running out of time now. I hoped he would have narrowed the gap more by now.

Little more than a channel crossing between them and still 1,000 or so miles to go, with light winds ahead...still think it is possible. Even if he remains in second, with this fight to the finish, plus the 24 hour record, he has probably generated as much publicity / buzz as coming first would have done. Truly amazing given he has a damaged boat! GO ALEX!

Yesterday for a while https://gis.ee/vg/ was showing ALC's AIS position on the chart. This is no longer the case does anyone know why it has stopped and why Alex AIS position did not show?

Yesterday BP was within shore based AIS vhf range whilst passing the Azores. We probably won't see this again until he is in vhf range off the French Coast. Seems Alex is not transmitting AIS vhf info., which could be a bit dicey especially at the speeds they are moving. As others have said, could be a tactical ploy.

With the homeward leg on the port (unfavoured tack for Alex) he really needs to be well ahead of Armel before the turn.

If all else remains equal and the Remora model is accurate, then Armel will cross the finish line with Alex in his rear view mirrors - 2 hours behind.

I do not understand the 24 hr record by AT-surely the large world encircling multihulls are faster over 24 hrs?

Peyron on Orange 2 a few years ago.
The record of AT is on monohull - which is quite amazing. Cannot even imagine what 20 knots must feel like... for me reaching more than 10 is already a record and I can count these occupancies on the fingers of one hand !

Too close to call for the finish. Armel might be a finer tactician (and actually not entirely convinced anymore when you Alex being that close) but Alex is definitely faster on Boss.
Still find it a shame they don't have all exactly the same boats to start with...
But whatever the end result, hat off to all the contestant with a special mention to Alex and Armel. All are "grands Messieurs " when it comes to sailing.

This must be brutally hard work - Alex has managed to close 0.2 miles in 3 hours (now 78.1 miles behind) - he may have the advantage of higher winds than Armel for 2-3 hours, so a bit of a 'elastic band' effect expected by next report.

Alex, please break away and go East towards the Portuguese shore. At least you may then get better winds. A gamble I know, but you are not going to win as tail end charlie trying to closely overtake Armel.
