Not much mention of this on the forums or in the media...

Anyway the race kicks off on Sunday at 1.02pm local time. I will be following Enda O'Coineen on Kilcullen Voyager and Alex Thomson on Hugo Boss.

Good luck to all involved.

Banque Populaire VIII for me. Not the sailor I am feeling the closer to, but definitely one of the (if not the) best solo sailor of the past few years. He really deserves to win it at least once. Go Chacal!

Oh goody ............

I like following them during the winter off season.

I'm rooting for Pieter Heerema the Dutchman.

65 years young.

'Hugo Boss' is a genuine contender. We've seen it a few times in the Solent as Alex Thomson is based in Gosport.
These foiling boats are almost beyond belief. I'd love to have go in one. For about half an hour. Eighty days alone at thirty knots? No thanks!

Have loaded the Vende Globe app on my ipad, but unable to get the audio to work. It is ok on the web site. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Huge line up this time. The start should be brilliant. It's a long race but they still want to get away first. I hope i can find a live stream. Hope this is Alex's time.

Subscribe to their e-mail service and you will have all the updates...

This is the one race I take any interest in. One day I hope to set off the day after them and follow them round - the distance getting greater and greater between them and me every day.

I've just finished A Voyage For Mad Men. Despite all the latest technologies I still admire their courage and fortitude, but it's not quite the same challenge.

+1 for "Voyage for Mad Men".
Well worth reading, particularly for anyone who harbours fantasy ideas of s/h round the world in an old boat (as I did in 1969 ). I'm glad the opportunity did not arise !!!
I'm looking forward to "The Mercy" which hopefully will be a genuine film with accurate screen-play/scripting.

Rooting for Alex. I saw the clip on Breakfast TV the other day and wondered if he wasn't clipped on. (SURELY he was, I thought)

Conrad Colman - no fossil fuel on board, all energy from solar or Oceanvolt hybrid hydrogenerator/motor. I wonder how he is heating food. He will be very cold in the southern ocean.

I'm wondering how they avoid traffic when sleeping - I'm guessing they have AIS and radar onboard?

Also interested in the skippers sleeping patterns - guessing something like 30 minutes on 30 minutes off sort of thing?

The race was given very extensive coverage in New Zealand by Sky Sports who have a pop-up channel devoted to the race. Yesterday night, I watched quite a lot of the start interviews with skippers.

I was intrigued by one subject raised by the commentators - about how noisy and uncomfortable the new generation of foiling boats are. The parallel was drawn with "white-noise" torture, apparently caused by the hissing of the foil in the water being transferred though the hull. Coupled with the sleep-deprivation all contestants must endure and the slamming caused by the extra speed, I can visualise what they mean. It was said that some contestants are carrying noise-cancelling headphones to try to get some relief. Anyone had any direct experience of this?
