Hi
With thanks for the info received from forumites so far, our plan for our two week summer jaunt is to head over to Northern Belgium this Saturday and end up in Antwerp early next week for a couple of days.
We will take the Hansweert to Wemeldinge canal into the inland waters of Holland.
From there, our thoughts are head to port, maybe take in Goes and then into the Veersemeer. Hang around a while there and then head back home via Veere, Middleburg and Vlissingen.
The main concern is depth. We draw around 1.85m so can we get up to Goes and will we be able to access the moorings around the islands of the Veersemeer?
Any thoughts on mooring in Goes, Kortgene, Veere, Middleburg, Vlissingen.
Thanks in advance.

I like the marina at Colijnsplaat, west of the south end of the Zeeland bridge. Nice town, lots of bars and restaurants.
Potential cross current on the entrance and you need to keep away from the seawall when you pass the pontoons as it gets shallow.

Hi
Us too. We especially like the prices in the Fishermans Coop at the Eastern end when compared to usual chandleries (brushes at less than €1 each etc). In fact their bag was the 'map' for a tour of several others further north in Holland last year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We've been into both Goes and Baastien de Langeplaat (the nicest island in the Veersemeer) drawing 1.9m... so can't see you having a problem.....

Of your list of suggested destinations, they are all lovely... in particular we like Veere....its a picture postcard destination, and well worth wandering around.... Goes is delightful, but faces very tough competion from Veere... Middelburg is a very picturesque marina, with a lovely waterway system, but the town can be a bit dull after several visits.....

Hi,

We draw 1.83 and Goes was no problem for us last year.
In Goes, you have 2 options The town quay which is bang in the middle of everything or the little marina(?) to the left after the lift bridge.
MArina is a little more peaceful and only 5 mins walk to town centre. I love the place personally.

Never tried the island on the Veersemeer so can't help with that, but there are plenty of places to anchor else where and plenty of other Marinas to choose from.

Cheers

Trev

Goes: delightful, either in the 'town centre' or the small marina to port just inside the road bridge.
Kortgene: well, its a marina, a bit soul-less and the priciest moorings we encountered anywhere over there last year. The toilet block is like a palace, however, so perhaps that's where the money goes!
Veere: lovely place although don't expect to buy any provisions except (I think) for bread. The club is great and has an excellent restaurant.
Middelburg: bustling busy town, we like it a lot but beware that one set of moorings (on the right as you enter the dock that has the Arne YC on your left) is beside a very busy road.
Vlissingen: the main town marina is right in the middle of things but can be noisy, and has very high walls around it so can be very hot and airless. Other folk like the small marina that is through the main lock and on the right before the first road bridge along the canal. We've not tried it.
We don't draw much so can't answer your questions about depths with certainty. Perhaps Sailorman will be along soon.

Thanks for the information given.
PS Hopefully Sailorman is in Dover or Belgium by now having had a slow start to his trip away following an extra night in the marina for a social

Hi,

Will endorse all that has been said about a fabulous cruising area. Went there 2 summers ago and decided to leave the boat there for a year and went back and forth about 8 times via car & ferry.

I draw 1.9m and the only problem I encountered was 1. in the Versemeer some of the island pontoons are a bit shallow so you can only moor on the outside of the little harbours- but the locals are very helpful about guiding you to suitable places and 2. if you go into the Gravelingermeer (spelling? ) the depths are shallower and you are a little (but not too much ) restricted with which harbours you can visit.

If you are taking children then the islands are fantatstic for campbuilding & exploring & swimming etc.

Goes yachtclub is lovely with one of the best 'outside toilets' you will ever encounter ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif -a short walk in to town along the canal. The town moorings are in a lovely basin surounded by old, well cared for buildings. Can be a bit noisy if there is a Harley D meeting going on in town !

Veere- lovely but tight - reverse in if the wind is blowing into the harbour as you have to moor facing bows out & turning round inside can be tricky. Eat in the yachtclub at Veere - the food is great.

Zeiriksee - again fab- but the bridge lift times are not as per any publication I used- so you can have a long wait till a commercial vessel comes along- they always give them priority.

Middelburg- again a lovely town and much nicer to spend time their than going down to Vlissingen.

One point to be aware of is that July is the main month of the Dutch school hols so it will be busy .Have lots of fenders ready for the scrum into the locks- not for the fainthearted but ok once you get used to it!

Enjoy- it is a fabulous place to cruise and as D3B says staying a year I only scratched the surface of the area from Vlissingen as far north as Dordrecht.

I have been several times & endorse what has been said.If you go in the hols season the Sport Club at Goes packs boats in & you may not be able to get out without much manouvering.I generally carry on to the town quay. The club at Middleburg is one of the most hospitable in Holland.Beware the Trappist beer.It is lethal. If you get to Zieriksee do make time to visit the Delta Project. It is a short trip by bus.The tourist office have all the info. You can go under the fixed bridge to Zieriksee, there are readouts at the designated arches giving the heights above water level.(I see you have a big boat so you probably need to use the lifting bridge at the one side) The indicator was showing 13m when I went under as my water to top of mast is about 12.5m.Have a good time.

One final thought.... if you do head for Baastien de Langeplaat, then either entrance to the little 'harbour' will be fine for you.... there isn't a lot of difference in depth....

There are two pontoons at the far end (Goes end) of the 'harbour', that are plenty deep enough at their outer end, but will be too shallow if you need to take the inshore slot...

At the Veere end of the 'harbour' (can't remember the orientation without getting charts out, hence the strange directions!), there is a long lateral pontoon, and this should be plenty deep enough for you too...

If all the available berths are full, (and rafting is perfectly acceptable), then at the Veere end of the harbour there is a quite large and quite deep pool (it is marked on the charts) in perfect shelter, and room for 3 or 4 more boats to swing.....

If its really calm, then there is acres of anchorage space outside of the island itself....

Hope that helps.

Pretty much echo everything said, we draw 1.9 and have been everywhere mentioned nearly, try for the centre of Goes rather than the little Marina as a bit more atmospheric imo.
I anchored in the veersmere and rowed ashore rather than cram onto the pontoons with everyone else. mossies can be a problem sometimes we made up nets from net curtains and knicker elastic very basic.
And if you get into Veer town, probably moored up by the yacht club in a fab dutch gin palace will be a mad englishman with a golded retriever, if you make contact get your drinking boots on!
