We have VDO analogue wind instruments circa 1989. The wind speed is working fine but wind direction is not.
Does anyone know the connections I have to make to the back of the instrument to determine if it is the guage or the unit at the top of the mast?
Many thanks in advance.

Do you just have just the wind instrument, or do you also have VDO log/depth and possibly multifunction display all linked together. I ask because I had the same sympton plus log/depth failure and it proved to be the master log/depth instrument at the chart table that had failed. VDO instruments use NMEA 0183 sentences to "talk" to one another and one instument is the master (i.e. the talker) and all others are slaves.
I suggest first check that there are no disconnected wires. (my own boat has a bit of a cats cradle to connect five instruments plus GPS antenna, autopilot and a VDO chartplotter).
If it all looks OK perhaps you should describe your full setup, and hope someone more expert than me will know where to look.
