VDO wind direction indicator - how to test?

Hi All,

I would like to fault find this 1985 VDO wind direction indicator, unfortunately I don't have any documentation. Does anyone have any technical details about these instruments? How can I test whether the problem is with the masthead unit or the gauge itself?

VDO wind problems?

Hi Ian - I have had some success sorting out our VDO wind instruments by referring to this link:

If I remember correctly the cable colours are similar to B & G, but it's a while since I looked so I may be wrong. Hope it's better than nothing though?

Probably not the reply you want to hear...

we had similar which failed in the early 90s. Took all to VDO in Birmingham. There was no economical way to repair then, due to a lack of parts.

That's a shame if you couldn't get spares 20 years ago what hope have I got now. Anyway I am still thinking the problem is probably something simple
and can be fixed without replacement parts. Lets hope some can raid their old paperwork and find some instructions for me.

Maybe someone who has working instruments could take measurements for you (and others in the future) to compare against. (assuming you're not the last to fail!)
There is info on other types (ST50/60) already published on here.

I had probs with 1980s Stowe wind instruments and they sorted them out.
They specialise in older systems. Also do B&G.

Worth a phone call.
