I can't see this doing any good. I'd rather get the focus on visas. It is possible to benefit with the new VAT situation whereas I don't see any upside to restrictions to 90 days in EU.
Agree ^^^ .
You want the VAT free status if buying new as a 3 P ( U.K. big three ) and operating it in the EU . Brexit benefit now

They are unlikely to cherry pick only your returned boats previously vat paid scenario , they will churn the whole lot over and risk loosing the new found vat free status on new U.K. boats in the Med .

Leave it .

For once I agree with one of Portos posts, this one is not the normal nonsense ;)

..... any UK resident with a VAT paid boat in the EU can retain it's EU VAT paid status and sell it as VAT paid in the EU with no monetary loss. Boats returning to the UK can claim returning goods (in the time window) and UK boats heading to the EU can get in under TA with no VAT payments.

The next boat however, can be bought and kept in the EU VAT free under TA saving a VAT payment and making the boat considerably cheaper.

This is how I acquired my first boat in Croatia before it joined the EU. It was VAT unpaid as I wasn't a Croatian resident and I can say that keeping a boat under TA (Temporary admission) is really not much of an inconvenience compared to the cost of paying VAT - the age of boat was also selected so that on the date of accession of Croatia to the EU it remained VAT free but got VAT paid status under the 8 year rule when joining the EU.

A UK resident buying anything in the EU can reclaim or avoid EU VAT if the goods are exported to the UK - many tourists enjoy this Duty Free shopping opportunity.

If you have given up your rights to free movement in the EU, then at least try and retain the benefits that come with being a 3rd country and 'only' having tourist status.

Baggyweinkle although your posting is correct regarding re claiming the VAT on a boat in the EU if you was then going to export it to the UK , once in the UK you going to have to pay UK VAT , plus if say the boats was second hand you won't be able to claim the vat and once in the UK having to pay vat , a UK resident can't own a boat in the UK thats not vat UK paid.
Many home boat owners think this will only effect people who want to bring their boat back to the UK , sorry to say it dont , read HMRC notes , it suggests everyone carry prove of vat payment part of this mean where the boat was Dec 2020 , now say your on a private mooring or your boat was kept in your garden , what prove do you have.
Even if at the end of the day HMRC don't pursuit it , you still have the stress of dealing with it for months .

I guess I have a concern when I come to sell my boat in the EU (I’m a UK citizen VAT paid in UK)
I say to the buyer “Trust me, I’m a non European and I can show you VAT paid in the UK and I have a letter from the marina saying the boat was here end 2020. All is well you now have EU VAT status”
Buyer walks away

David in which case if its sold to a EU citizen he be stuck with having to pay vat in the EU again the UK vat is meanless which will make your boat less attractive to EU buyers
Edit i see you have edited your posting , if you have prove the boat was in the EU you should be fine, although some buyers may not know the rules

Now, being a resident in Belgium and a British passport holder, if I have a new to me EU VAT paid boat, what situation am I in if I want to sail my boat around the UK for a few months?
Where the registration and where are you resident?
If your resident in as you say Belgium you can't have a boat under ssr well not legally

I’m assuming the rules are reversible to a UK boat sailing the Med, if so temporary admission procedure' (TA) rules give you 18 months
I‘m also assuming that you have “real” EU VAT paid and not “end 2020“ version

I have no boat at the moment, I'm looking for a 10m or so cabin cruiser, it has been about 15 years since my last one.
I I have had to apply for residency in Belgium to be with my family, it has not been granted yet so I am still domiciled at my house in the UK.
