I have a non vat paid boat in Guernsey and wish to sail in the EU this year. I just dont understand what paper work I have to fill in once I get to my first port of call in France. We hope to go down via the midi to the med but are very unsure as to the VAT regs. Do I have to do a temporary import with the boat in France ? But if so what happens when we get to Italy etc ? Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

I'm not sure about what happens in France, but Spain now enforces the european law, allowing "non-communitarian" boats to stay 18 months in the european waters "free of VAT".

I posted a pretty long message on this subject in the Live aboard Forum on March 18th.
Please refer to this message.
I now have a printout of the law on board, to try to convince any overzealous Custom Officer, should the case happen.

Hope this helps.

Any feedback welcome.

Have a nice sail.
