Hi all

I own a wooden boat with a varnished hull which is starting to get a little tatty looking. I plan to:

1. Strip off all old varnish

2. Clean the wood (Iroko) to remove staining

3. Revarnish it

Can anyone recommend products to use at each stage? e.g. what cleaners are good, good varnishes etc. Thanx in advance

I'd agree, although there were some quite long threads on this subject in the spring on this forum as well.

I always strip the varnish (in the cockpit) manually, with a skarsten or similar scraper. I believe you can get proprietary varnish stripping chemicals. If they are too runny to stay on the hull, you may be able to thicken them with wallpaper paste.

I have used StarBrite teak cleaner on both teak and mahogany and it seems to work, though I'd use the wallpaper paste trick again on vertical surfaces. There are many others.

I favour Epiphanes varnish myself but there are several good ones around, you can usually tell how good it is by the price.
