Hello Folks.
As some will know ive been having problems with me old lumps.(its a long story).
The fuel injection pump is now ready to be put back on the engine,The fuel lines have been renewed and the lift pump replaced, also the water pump re-built.Now the problem. To time the injection pump i need to get No6 cylinder to TDC and then turn the engine over by hand to the correct position of 16Deg BTDC. During the period of work being carried out on the engine with no injection pump fitted the engine has been turned over a few times (by hand) Today i started to install the injection pump and bugger me there are no timing marks on the flywheel or on the pump drive gears so i have no ref(i know i should have marked it up before i ripped it off the engine).so the only way i can do it is to carry out the settings as per the manual,to do this i need to get hold of a Volvo tool to compress the exhaust valve springs on No6 cylinder(this allows the valve to drop onto the piston,Then i measure the distance the piston moves via a dial gauge on the valve stem top) The tool number is 884473 anybody got one they would be willing to let me use for a couple of days? or know where i would be likely to get one? i could knock up a gizmo to do the job but if i can get the right tool it would be better.

Long winded question really

Thanks troops

Blimey Tug, that really is getting to the nitty gritty of engine rebuilding.
But.. surely the MD32 only has 4 cylinders  and I thought that the injection timeing was done on No 1 cylinder and measuring the injection plunger distance from 45 deg BTDC to TDC ( you need the tool that locks the flywheel as it reaches TDC on No 1 cylinder).
Sorry can't help, but I'm sure Volvopaul of this forum has all the kit, worth sending him a PM if you don't get any positive replies. Good Luck.

The MD32A has 6 cylinders and the MD21 has 4. The timing (as i understand) is taken from No 4 Cylinder on the 21 and No 6 cylinder on the 32 both these setting are taken after the engine has been turned so the inlet Vv on cylider No 1 is closed and the Exhaust valve just starts to open.In this position either No6 cylinder(MD32A) or No4 cylinder(21) is near to or at TDC the engine then needs to be turned anti-clockwise and then again clockwise to the given setting of advanced injection (MD21=19Deg. MD32A=16Deg) at this position the injection pump is fitted to the engine. The pump itself also has to be set correctly before fitting but this is not so difficult as all the marks are there and you also use a dial gauge to set these.

Both engines require that the exhaust valve spings are removed so as to allow the valve to sit on the top of the piston,You then put a dial gauge on the top of the valve stem and adjust the engine until the specified reading on the dial gauge is reached. This setting is the advanced injection point.

Im finding it difficult to get the bloody springs off !!!

Ahh... totally different engine. I was thinking of the derivative of the 31 series, which come to think of it was only made with the supercharger and became the KAD32.
Sorry, still can't help but am a little wiser:rolleyes:

I'm having the same problem with mine at the moment. My engine has been smoking white smoke and a leaving a film of unburned diesel on the water.. it runs lovely but smoke is unbearable. I also have no timing marks. Did you get yours sorted?

Mine is also a md32 (6 cylinder)
