valve clearance adjustment, warm or cold engine?

Just had a larger then usual service on my 2 KAD43's, 12 new injectors and valve clearence adjustment.
Not really looking forward to the invoice though however the engines ran super nice after the work was done.

Particularly when we fired them up cold they were much quieter then ususal which I assumed was becouse of the valve adjustment, less clatter from the top.
However when warm they sounded just as they used to which got me thinking at what temperature they should be adjusted at, cold or operating temp.

Anyone know?

Michael,

You should be able to find this out from the workshop manual. The valves can be adjusted hot or cold, but will have different clearances accordingly. It is clearly easier to do them cold, and as long as you use the right clearances, you should be fine.

Did you get a report fom the engineer or the bosch agent who did the the testing prior to them supplying new injectors, also have you actually had brand new injectors or the original ones refurbished with new nozzles? as the price difference here in the uk is quite alarming.

They sent the old injectors for testing and I was told they were all out of spec. I did not get or ask for a report, I knew something was not right as the engines had been running less smooth lately and with 1050 hours on them I figured they were due for a bit of TLC so to speak.

No they are not new they are the original ones refurbished with new nozzles but they still cost me a fair bit, around £130 each.
Completely new ones cost around £370 each but I was told the refurbished ones was equal to new if done correct.

Blimey, I wouldn't call "a bit of TLC" the injectors replacement at one thousand hours...
Surely volvopaul knows better, but I would expect them to last much more, unless you used dirty fuel or summink?

Mapis, I always advise boat owners to at least have there injectors removed and tested at 1000 hours or 10 years, especially on the 41/42/43 series engines as the injector nozzles wear causing bore washing if the spray pattern is not good, this can lead to piston failure.

Are the injectors on KAD42 easy to replace or are specialist tools required? The manuel warns about water getting in the engine.

Without the proper tool you risk moving the nozzle sleeve which will let the coolant water into the cylinder.

To my knowledge the injestors cleaning or replacement on the 42 and 43 is due every 500 engine hours on the Volvo manual????
1000 eh is for the 41.
Have the starboard engine which lost 200 rpm WOT and I think infact will do earlier, now having about 370eh. Might clean, change them in 2013.

Sorry no number as the bosch dealer reads the numbers on the nozzle usually with a maginifying glass!! then orders the nozzles, the rest of the body is retained and adjusted to suit the correct opening pressure with shimms under the springs.
