When applying for an RYA YM exam, what counts as a valid first aid certificate?

I have a level 2 in first aid, I'm guessing that counts?

What else would count?

many thanks in adavance.

When I once questioned the RYA about this they were happy that it could be any standard one day course, as run by the Red Cross or St. John, but it should cover off hypothermia in some detail - especially following immersion in water - and also secondary drowning. Obvious really. I'm sure any instructor would be happy to talk about these as additional items if you asked - most classes I've been are taken by those renewing so can move fairly quickly.

Certainly these points were covered off in detail the one time I did a sailing specific course - the instructor used an RN video showing Duncan Goodhew and Sharon Davies swimming in a tank held at 5C whilst wearing normal day clothes. After 10 minutes their strokes were completely un-cordinated - frightening!

If you employer needs First aiders i suggest the First Aid at work course.

I always mention to the instructors that I want them to tell me when I should act differently as medical help is unlikely for a few hours plus any aspects relevant to boating and they have been very helpful.

I think its a 3 days course.

I am in charge of H & S at my work and ensure anyone connected with boating as a hobby that wants to do first aid is recommended to take the course. Just a co-incidence!!

No offence to the OP but it always amuses me that there are people who genuinely believe that they are ready to become a yachtmaster yet are unable to find this sort of information on their own. It's in the RYA logbook, it's on the RYA website, Google leads you straight to the information when typing the above question in verbatim.

Perhaps hold off the certificates for a while and practice self sufficiency a little? Exams will not help you to become a better sailor, but further courses, research, reading, and most importantly practice will.

Wow, thanks LustyD for the very helpful post........

I am actually on a ship at the moment with very very slow internet, I have been very grateful of the replies, which have elaborated on the topic more than a Google search can bring up. (See Marklucas' post)

I have training in first aid, I have training in sailing (also extensive experience) and if you would like to look at my previous posts, I sail solo a lot of the time.... requiring self sufficiency.

Just because the winter is getting you down, don't cast aspersions on my sailing, from a simple question.

commercial endorsement

Good luck with your Yacht Master, if you want to get your Yacht Master Commercially endorsed you may want to check your First Aid certificate is Valid for STCW 95. I may be wrong but I think the Red Cross/St Johns Etc. are not.

Correct.

Only an MCA accredited first aid certificate, to the STCW95 standard, counts for commercial endorsement.

Most sailing schools will do the course, it's still only one day unless you're looking for the further afield requirements.

When I applied for my YM commercial endorsement the St Johns "First Aid at Work" course certificate was accepted by the RYA.

It was then IIRC a 4 day course and has to be renewed every 3 yrs.

Is this no longer accepted but a 1 day RYA course only done once is?

That must present quite a challenge logistically!!;)

Yes, yes, yes - we know all that. But you don't understand what a forum is all about.

It's no different to a pub, or a club bar where someone drifts in, asks something that's on their mind, gets some rights answers and some wrong ones and goes away again. You bump into people you like, and people you'd be happy to avoid.

We're not taking exams in here. We're having a chat, between mates, chewing stuff over. Relax.

+1 but you have to make allowances for smarty pants.

Our club holds 1 day First Aid courses every so often, they give a certificate but no idea if it applies to the YM ticket, I did mine before the 'commercial endorsement' thing and having seen the lifestyle of pro' instructors I don't fancy it.

At the club on the last course, the obviously wordly wise nurse asked a very pretty girl to be the subject for CPR and 'the kiss of life'; by the time I had my hand up I'd nearly been trampled in the rush ! :)

I'm sure your examiner will happily accept being on a boat as a good reason for inability to find information. I wasn't trying to be difficult, just saying that being a Yachtmaster is more to do with having the ability to find and use information than knowing the answer to questions. I agree that a forum is a great place to ask questions, but if you're seriously preparing for the assessment then surely you've at least read the RYA information about it which includes the information you requested, hence my comment. If you have not yet read the RYA information then I suggest you do so as it will help you to prepare yourself.
