These bags would appear to be very useful on the boat for storing bedding etc to save it getting damp.

I haven't got a vacuum on board, any ideas for an alternative method of extracting the air that would work?

Many thanks for all replies

These ones seem a bit stronger than the usual Robert Dyas/JML ones and come with an adaptor for a dinghy pump:

Depending on size, you might even be able to fit sails (chute, etc) in them.

I use my dinghy foot pump (on extract). The pump tube needs to be held over the bag valve as it is not an exact fit, can be done alone but easier with two people.

we made an adapter from small funnel some self adhesive rubber strip for the seal and a hose to connect to the dinghy pump. Seal is not perfect but it works. Last year poundland at some bags on offer and these have been better than our more expesive ones.

Remember to check these bags after a week - ones we tried looked great at first but over a month they clearly hadn't really worked and vacuum had been lost.

When using it on the boat I sit on mine :D

I only really wanted it to keep things dry and by sitting on it it does get some of the air out.

As other have found, quality varies.

I bought a couple from JTF “discount ware house” a few months ago these ones don’t use a vacuum but work on a zigzag of chambers at the none opening end of the bag acting as a valve. The items are placed in the bag then sealed with the zip fastener and rolled from the zip end removing the air in the process. I think they were about £3 for 2 or 3 and I have used them for the bedding over winter.

Don't laugh...

...But, when there was no hoover to be used, I did suck on the valves and use lung power to extract as much air as possible. Fortunately the contents of the bag were non-toxic, non-smelly items and I did not mind inhaling the air.

It did work and I managed to lock the valve.
