Is there such a thing as a good/ok 12 vacuum cleaner.

Am prepared to mess around using an inverter to charge say an 18v b&d type if they are worth the hassle.

needs to be smallish too

whathaveyou?

We have one of that style but a no brand and it is rubbish. Lots of noise but no action, like a mini metro fan switch - gets louder or quieter but no airflow.

I am willing to take your advice, can you comment regarding past cheapo car vacs you have owned and is the B&D streets above?

I do my best, they will be illegal patent infringing copies of Western models anyhow. Got to protect your pensions don't you know...

But I also imagine after my DVD searches that it will be near impossible to find none Chinese cleaners.

What did you have in mind?

We use a black and Decker - from memory was around £29 in Argos and does ok. On our cord carpeted cockpit I find a good old fashioned dustpan and stiff brush works best.

Yup

I've got a fantastic 12V Dirt Devil hand held jobby. Has long (thick) cable to cigar lighter, rotating beater / brush bar, little bag, small hatch to allow connection of flexible tube and crevice tool (if you understand my meaning).

Oh yes, and loads of suck.

Just had a Google and can't find one to show you.

There was a thread dealing with this started August 10th last year - "Vacuum Cleaners on Board".

The DeWalt DC500 seems to be the most powerful but it is very expensive, even without the batteries. Perhaps it could be wired up to run off the boat's batteries.

wow your not joking about cost (£100ish new). But if we live on board then it is similar to a good quality home vac (justifying maybe).

Trying to get an impression of the size from photo's online. Says 4.5 kg which is fairly heavy, I guess that is with batteries fitted??

we gave up on the 12v and have a proper 230v 900w run from the portable generator (or it would be if the generator hadnt gone wrong!)

The Ryobi 'Tuff Sucker' (really) is £20 in 'bare' 18v version - if you have another Ryobi 18v tool this is OK

Otherwise, yes, the De Walt (£75 without battery - if you have de Walt Cordless)

I was debating getting a 12V vacuum cleaner, but in the end got a rechargeable 240V one from lidl for about a tenner. It works really well, as long as you remember to charge it - never had it run out yet. Not much use if you dont have shore power though, and no idea how long it will last.

We found the same Talbot - all the 12v ones are toys.

Can be seen to be so by considering that need alot of power to get much suck - a typical home size cleaner is well over a kilowatt (often near 2 kW) and getting anywhere near even a minute fraction of that with a 12v cleaner is impractical.

We went for one of the small versions of the 230v pull along behind you household ones (think called canister cleaners, and if recall right ours is a Sanyo) - about 900 watts too I think (am not on the boat so not sure on that).

We have a 12v B&D plug in one. Seems to work ok with the compartment needing regular emptying. Have also used the flex connection bit to a vaucum scraper that worked well. In the spring I do use a 240v one for the main clean.

Is this for some car-dogging thing?

Can't think of any other reason for vacuuming.

Well, there is the dogging, actually, the dog.. He does not actually malt, his breed description tells me that; though he does a good impression of it some days.

Sand, we are not on a big pond made of rock /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would love hard floors but the design does not lend itself to wooden cabin soles and I like the warmth. We bank on 2 seasons per carpet at present, especially while she is work in progress.

Oh lets be honest, it is to shut SWMBO up! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have this problem now, been justifying the overpriced one that seems to come highly recommended. Oh, I can't justify buying it for myself, but that would make it a perfect joint crissy present from my mum, she is always struggling for ideas. I like the idea of a wet and dry as it means we can wash the carpets.

This gets us both, SWMBO and I in one foul swoop.

Best pressies are stuff you want but can't justify buying for yourself, don't you think.
