I forgot to look when I was down on the boat, has anyone replaced the coax to a YHK antenna? I gather there's an unusual terminal of some sort on there? I'm unsure as to what it is. Thanks

Thanks. I was hoping to fit better cable, specifically M&P Ultraflex 7. Is that feasible? Thanks
Given that the YHK/YWX must be on of the most popular antennas, Shakespeare make it oddly invisible online.

I suspect you will have issues getting the 7.3mm diameter cable into the fitting that is usually used with a 6mm diameter RG58 cable. Even if you have to drill out the plastic part, you would still have to get the braided section into the ferrule.

If someone has tried it then let us know if it fitted.

Thanks. Doesn't sound overly hopeful, but not necessarily a lost cause. I'll have a look at it at the weekend if I can (I've got one on the pushpit so rather more accessible than usual) but was hoping to be fitting the new cable then though.

As you say ... not necessarily a lost cause.

I have two Aircell-7 cables to the masthead and I'm sure that although one has a PL259 into a metz antenna, the other (somehow) did fit into a V-Tronix Hawk antenna, since that was already at the top with the built in wind indicator.

Thinking about it now, the braided shield in the Aircell7 co-ax was a similar size/diameter to the V-Tronix ferrule that is crimped onto the smaller diameter RG58. I seem to think that I might just have tinned the braid (with solder) on the Aircell-7 (after pushing the plastic screw fitting and a cut down seal over the cable) and the result was a tight fit into the antenna base, just like the crimped ferrule would have been.

I sell loads of the YHK, and the terminal kits, so works for me!

But the original poster wishes to try to use a better (less lossy) feed cable than RG58.... hence wondering if the terminal kit will fit a 7.3mm diameter cable.

Although I must admit, changing to a thicker feed cable wasn't mentioned in the first post.

I didn't think to mention it, I'm a noob at antennae and it had never occurred to me in the first instance that you wouldn't be able to replace the cable,?. Anyway, I've looked at if fairly closely and ther doesn't seem to be any meat on the base, to be able to enlarge the hole, plus the issue with the brass doodah inside. I found that the hawk tube had corroded, splitting the casing top anyway, so its toast AFAIC. I'll do a post mortem out of interest. Shan't be buying one of these in the future, rather underwhelmed.
