Hi esteamed forumites, spotted this on e-bay, am I reading it right? is this suitable for use over here? web page Cheers in advance, Mike /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Suitable?

Is it suitable for use over here, you ask. Of course it is, it'll work fine, and won't cause any undue interference, etc. However, it's unlikely to have the magic "CE" letters on it, so it will be illegal to fit it. You'll have to pay the inflated UK price if you want to be legal!

It would appear that the same radio is sold here by Mailspeed with no apparent difference in the Model number.

You need to confirm it can be set for both USA and International operation. When set for USA operation not only are some of the duplex channels set up for simplex IE channels 20 to 28 etc but other channels are defaulted to 1 watt operation and this includes 67 which you don't want.

If it can be set to International that is fine. Mailspeed do not mention USA/INT operation but you could ask them /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif They advise it also has ATIS which is used in the canals in Europe so it could have all bells and whistles. Why not e-mail the seller???

[/ QUOTE ]Neither seller is quoting the full model number, which is either 7100US or 7100EU. The EU version will be CE-marked and legal for UK use; the US version won't be CE-marked and won't be legal. Both versions will work in substantially identical ways, and will offer a choice of USA, Canadian and International channels. The US version also offers weather info; the EU version also offers ATIS. About the cheapest UK price is £139 inc UK shipping from JG Technologies.

I went down this route last year by purchasing an icom unit from west marine, it was less than half the UK price. The unit is not CE certified but this does not worry me, I don’t see any safety issues here as US boats are allowed to use the same radios while in European waters without causing any problems.

THE ONLY DRWVACK is the USA channels are not identical to the UK channels, 16 etc are the same but ch80 is different from European vhf sets as is ch86. When calling marinas on ch80 they can hear you but you cant hear their reply.

I have found someone to reprogram the set but as yet I don’t know how much this will cost.

If you download the us and european handbooks from the icom site you will see the different channel allocations.

The Icom sets can usually be switched from USA to International which sorts out the problems with Channel 80 etc

Dont forget that CE is not type approval. Just means you can eat the paint and wont get killed if you only stick your fingers where you are supposed to /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Type approval is a separate issue.

exactly, if a yankee doodle dandle when he visits say goddamn, muh radio isnt working cause i'm in europe, does he hell as like, he switches the switch to interntional and homdoolyla he talks to us!!

Re: Suitable?

Well, 'illegal to import' means you run the not-inconsiderable risk of having the item confiscated by an HMCE officer working in the mail sorting office, so you lose not only the item, but whatever you paid for it. And you also risk an 'examplary prosecution', as well.

Worth the bother for a few quid? Your choice......

Re: v.h.f from U.S

US have a lower functionality DSC standard, that is designed for US territory only, but they still have other DSC class radios, as those that will be using them outside US territory still legally require the higher standard. That might change as they were pressing to make the lower standard international.

It's not exactly a few quid though, is it? US buyers can get exactly the same quality radio equipment at about half the price we're charged in the UK. Virtually all the stuff comes out of China at prices we can't even dream of. So who's making the excess profits?
