No1’s Dell Inspiron 8000 has failed in a big way for the nine billionth time so we are hunting around for a new one that will work reliably (he doesn’t want to loose loads of work again) and can run “graphic intensive programmes” (ie. Games!) It would also be nice if we could buy bits for it and get people to look at it without sending it to Ireland which is the main reason for going to Sony.
I have found the Sony GRT 916V which seems to fit the bill but is very expensive.

Anyone out there (Happy1!) have any other suggestions?

Thanks
Ian

I think you may have been unlucky with your Dell. We have thounsands of them at work and they are reliable. There again we fix them in house if they break. I also have Dell at home and it's been perfect.

What problems were you having, sofware or hardware?

The ultimate in PC's optimised for "graphic intensive" programmes seem to be the Alienware PC's. Look pretty cool too but expensive. http://www.alienware.co.uk

I'm on my second Evesham - as well - and they are just along the road from me - "Local PC builder"

Evesham and Mesh usually win most PC mag test hands down, and for very good reason. If you want ultra gaming potential there are a few niche players, but if I were you, Evesham and Mesh.

Excellent cutting edge performance, superb build quality (you can actually put additional memory and other stuff in without rebuilding the entire machine, or finding things won't fit due to other components being in the way, and cables are intelligently routed and secured so they don't get in the way)
and support is excellent.

We use nothing but Dell at work and they are mostly A1 bits of kit. If we do have problems (electronics will break occasionally, even Sony) the Dell service has been second to none.

If you are looking for a decent all round machine with the emphasis on graphics speed & power I would suggest you trawl through a few issues of PC pro or the like. They review most of the major players offerings and rate them on various levels such as graphics speeds, processor speeds etc. Most of the good stuff is a little more pricey because they spend the time 'matching' the component parts. The whole machine will perform optimally.

I would not becessarily spend my money on the expensive Sony stuff. Its obviously pretty good, but can be modular, so its expensive to repair if it fails. A lot of the OEM builders, like Evesham, will use bought in parts from main stream manufactureres that they assemble. This can be cheaper on the pocket if things go wrong, as only the bit that breaks needs to be replaced as it is on a seperate 'subsystem' from the other stuff.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

Moose,

Can you tell us what problems and fixes you have had, maybe we can suggest something other than a format and re-install?

I'm not very genned up with Sony PC's but they may be a bit proprietary, non standard AT format for motherboards / cd drives and such like. Maybe not so easy to get spares for if this is the case.

No ...no other suggestions Sony will do fine. Ive had mine since 1998 and Ive just retired it to the boat to look after the charting..still going strong.
Gludy, of this parish forum has just bought himself a wonderful new Sony laptop
which he's very pleased with, lovely bit of kit. OK they aint cheap but you do get quality with a capital Q.
One minor word of caution, in that bits and pieces for them can be a mite expensive and sometimes proprietory only. When I first bought mine six years ago they were running their online sales and service out of Belgium (Club Vaio)..dunno if that's changed or not.
I'm certainly going to buy another Sony Laptop, but SWMBO says I have to stop spending on the boat first, yeah fat chance!

Steve

I'm with Talon on this. I have run 6 computers over the years, and have only reformatted on one computer once, and that was to remove a virus in a hurry, reformatting is the last straw. What symptoms did you have?

By the way, the computers I have used are Compaq x 2, Advent, PC Worlds own brand, two local computer shop units at work and an old Research Machines unit
