I have a nokia 6301i and a palm tungsten T5, both with bluetooth. The phone will get the internet ( vodafone live) but very slow and tiny screen, I want to link the T5 to the phone to use it`s better screen to be able to look at weather maps etc. I have managed to pair the two but can`t get the internet: do I need to subscibe to a separate ISP and what have people used: I have BT broadband at home but do i ned something else for the phone/pda?, does the setup work and can you actually get met sites at reasonable speed and cost?

You need GPRS enabled on your phone, but it's £1 per mb, great for emails not so good for large files like pictures, can just stay connected if not much traffic as you only pay per meg.

Linked up a Sony Ericsson 750i and my Ipaq via Bluetooth. It was really really slow IMHO not worth it. I gave up and just use phone on its own or 3g card in lappy.

It's got to be simpler to use Navtex and VHF and radio to access wxfcsts. And synoptic charts from newspapers!!!

You need Vodafone IP access which is different to the WAP port on the network. Contract only I think, prob. not available on pre-pay SIM.

You could also try using a Circuit Switched Data connection which runs at a heady 9.6Kbps, and may be what you have to use onthis older kit.

Vodafone data support should be able to set the relevant services for you and give you the connection settings.

I use a Nokia 6021 and a Palm Tugsten T3 linked by bluetooth.

The Nokia is PAYG on Orange. I use the Palm mainly to access the Shipping Forecast, Weather Forecasts and Chimet etc. plus check e-mails. I've even managed to log onto the YBW site, but admittedly that is a bit slow.
It's adequate.

Not a great idea; an unwanted dialler can start processing gigabytes of data. One poor chap ran up a £6000 bill on his Mobile when it did this!

I recomment T-Mobile Web and Walk (Plus)
This is an all you can eat(ish) data service for £12.50, now I surf from my boat wherever I am with no worries!

Good point, but do people still have dialers? (Well unknown ones anyway)

I only use the one I set up and the security stops any others creating themselves. We run about 20 phones on GPRS, its not as fast as broadband but seem a lot faster than dialup.

Although I said you can stay connected, I dont and wouldnt recommend it.

That's 12.50 on top of a talk plan contract- FlexT or Relax (I did same yesterday).
You can go 7.50 a month on top also, but the 12.50 deal's better. There's another more expensive one too.
Otherwise a data- only one with a pcmcia datacard for 29 a month is pretty good and includes free use of t-mobile wifi hotspots (in all Starbuck's amongst other places).
Jem.
