Using a vhf handheld

Richard, I think he has a point, and it wasn't really arsey. VHF procedure isn't intuitive or self-explanatory even to an honours graduate in electronics - you have to learn it from a book or a course. All the questions asked are classic course material - OK, we all forget stuff but then again we have done the work, so it is only a matter or remembering it, and if you've done the course you have the book and can look it up.

Quite apart from being 'a requirement' (and my own position is that I am not a policeman and don't wish to judge others in respect of not having licences, paying taxes or whatever) it is a coursework issue so clearly going on a course (or reading the course book) would be the answer.

There also is the point that folks who use radio when they are out of date on procedure can be a blooming menace when the *hit hits the fan.

David,

I dont disagree with the sentiment, i.e. if you havent done the course, you really ought to, both for your own good, aswell as being a legal requirement. I just think it could have been worded in a friendlier manner - that isnt to say that I am never arsey /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Some people may not know that the course exists, nor that it is a legal requirement to be licenced.

Anyway... I dont think we fell out, and a bit of humour has entered the exchange.

Just hope I can remember to follow our procedure if the **** ever hits the fan.

That's a bit of an arsey response - if he hasnt done the course, then perhaps it's a good idea, but it could have been more pleasantly worded. If he's done the course, it all happens fairly quickly so there are bound to be some things which are forgotten.

As far as I can tell, he hasnt done anything to cause grief to others: had a problem transmitting, read the manual, and is just seeking some clarification on a few points - isnt that what we do here?

If it's a problem with the set, then suggesting the VHF course would achieve Sweet FA.

I must admit there are some things being discussed that I need refreshing, even though I've done the course, and used to use VHF professionally, (long time ago).

You could suggest to everyone considering asking a question about their diesel engine that they do the f'ing course and stop bothering people here - I dont think so.

Have you got out of the wrong side of the bed?

Not at all!.........I have always found your posts both courtious and well put............Not always heart warming, but ya can't win 'em all can ya? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would have to say you have been on a very poor course and would suggest you write to the RYA.

From your first post my reaction would have been that you had not done the course!

Power settings and levels should be covered.
Channel allocation and relevent power settings should be covered and hand out issused.
Duplex/Simplex def should be covered.

When did you do your course?

It sounds very odd you missed out on some very important information.
Am worried what else may have been missed.

As an SRC instructor it saddens me that there is such a wide gap in the level at which some of thses courses are taught.
