I think I have now learned that if SWMBO makes an observation then I am about do to something extremely stupid and should give her my full attention. Harmony on board for the rest of the day also seems directly linked to her not having to repeat it three times.

Going up the Thames and couldn't understand why the boat was 'sluggish' then remembered we'd dropped the anchor at the mooring in case someone slipped the lines and we were involuntarily dredging the river. Never left the shore power in though, sounds as if I missed a treat. I have seen a couple of power stanchions pulled off though, happened in Penarth a while back (one of the commercial fishermen) so I can't really blame Rafiki for the reminder from the marina owners. :-)

Oi

While arriving at the folly inn with a crew of newbies i state.."this is a bit tricky so i better take over". Tired to be a smart arse and fit in between to lots of rafts..tried and failed to use the tide to ferry glide in..ended up across the bows or 4 other yachts...not my finest hour i must say.

Tried reversing out of a marina on my first boat..long keep 26ft yacht..i suddenly found out that long keep boats are impossible to steer astern unless you have lots of speed...which i didn't...lots of shouting later with lots of feet here there and everywhere i turned around with no damage done. I did look rather daft though.

I once charted a 40ft thing for a mates stag weekend..Sat night arrived in west cowes and was given a berth number...i took one look and said no. the tide was in full edd meaning a fast tide pushing me straight down the 90ft finger berth. Some on my boat said they could do it and what a rubbish 'driver' i was. Found another berth and all was fine.
Some 20 mins later a yacht arrived in the berth i had refused...to the sound of gel coat cracking as he drove up onto the pontoon at the end....followed some 10 mins later by another yacht coming in on the end of the same pontoon. I sat with beer in hard looking very smug as the sound of stainless steel bending filled the air as the 2nd yacht ran fast into the back of the 1st yacht. the 'helpful' crew i had earlier said nothing.

 At least I am not the only one that makes these fundamental mistakes. Even the best of them (do not include myself here) still have a brain freeze, it makes us mere mortal feel much better

Agreed, how many times have we all watched a neighbor execute a manoeuvre with confidence and we try and do the same thing and f*** it up

As stated elsewhere "I have never missed a penalty from the comfort of my own armchair ............."

Fitted a new outboard on a tender with it still on the bathing platform. Sat back on the tube to admire my work forgetting that i'd had to release the tie down straps to fit the engine. Both me and the tender ended up in the wateer, the tender floating upside down with the wrong half of the outboard submerged

There have been so many user errors over the years. I suppose one of the most embarassing was wiping off the radome of a Sealine 305 on the underside of Bursleden bridge in front of audience standing on the bridge above and despite my SWMBO yelling at me that there was no way we'd get under. The radome fell into the cockpit below onto a poor unsuspecting dog belonging to the new girlfriend of one of my mates. The dog spent the rest of the trip cowering under the saloon table. Neither the girlfriend or the dog came on the boat again. Never understood why

Two selections from me...
One lovely sunny day, we got everything ready for a potter up the Thames, did all the checks, left the (very tight) berth at Windsor Marina and began backing up the fairway..... Only to realise that or very confused dog was sitting on the riverbank wondering why we had left her behind...

More recently, we bought a boat with electronic controls... Very posh me thinks. First outing with the family, wife casts off bow, I do the stern then run up to the flybridge ready to do clever things with throttles and walk the boat out... Only nothing happens and new boat is drifting towards a rather lovely Targa 47. "Darling, I have no power..." says I slightly panicked as I cannot make the electronic controls active... I then realise they are in gear. In sorting this out, I bump against the dash and stop one engine... Finally I get both engines started with throttles working and look up wondering why we haven't bumped into anything yet to see that my wife lassoed a cleat ages ago while her muppet husband sorted himself out.... I love my wife!
