Used Boat shows

Well, SpottyDog didn't sell, I understand she had quite a few possitive viewings, but no offers, heres hoping something might happen in the follwing weeks.

I can't knock Ancasta for their efforts though, they kept me well informed, went down and took extra photos for emailing, every time I when down they looked they were trying hard for me.

It seemed busy enough, although they were certainly not rushed off their feet, but you only need one buyer.....

BTW, If anybody wants a F43, I am open to trade ins :)
 
Nice banter guys, seriously the f43 isnt for me or the wife, she would have an sc35 tomorrow!.

The reason we want to trade up is the flybridge ladder, we wants steps , I also would like a jet ski before im too old, the boat we have now can do neither a later princess or Fairline is just the ticket, ie Princess 40/42 and a phantom 43 also ticks the box.

As we will be moving from Nottinghamshire to somewhere near the Hamble in approx 5 years time we really want to have a final blow out with a nice boat that we need for the next 5 years, then we will have something smaller and maybe a targa when we live South.

Seahope I see your point about depreciation very clear, im amazed how much my boat has lost in the last 3 years, I started asking 114950, dropped to 99950, still not really any money on the table, seriously how low do you go, if I sold for 80k im still a large gap away from what i want, and I then may find that used boats i am interested in supply will dry up if new boats are not sold into the chain.

I know we all need to make a living ive tried to talk to certain dealers whom I wont mention at this stage but what disgusts me is there car salesman attitude of a sillly low offer on mine but wanting reatail for there boat, I think in this current climate they really need to wake up and listen, if im going to take 80k off them I may as well sell it private and let someone have a 90k boat for 80k and have the money in my pocket to go out and do the same and bid a dealer or whoever a kick in the balls on there boat, it has to work both ways within reason.

Sure im going to get some stick but ive never had a pro survey yet on any boat ive bought, and therfore never used it as a further tool to get the price down further after an agreed deal.

I have been looking at princess 40s for a while now at dealers, there on at silly money, we bid on one a while back and were happy to have 2 boats at the time, offer was rejected to find the boat was sold anyway for less than id offered, there is a 40 on our pontoon thats been for sale for nearly a year, I often discuss with the owner what hes been bid, itsthe cheapest 40 on the market on yachtworld, its very nice and advertised 20k below dealer prices and yet has to be sold, it just tells me that dealer prices are very over inflated.

furthermore.. it's a boat I am seriously interested in but with this attitude, I'll walk away, bide my time and sell my boat for a decent price before buying if this is what the marine px attitude is like.. feel sorry for the boat owner, they've lost a potential sale and will end up getting less for their boat no doubt as part of the px deal they have with this broker
 
I totally agree, you can only take the kick in the nuts if you can pass it on !
I understand the "market" decides the price, but it gets to the stage where its just not worth the difference to change.
At around 1/3 of the cost of a new "equivalent" I see my 8 year old boat as somewhat of a bargain.
 
I believe in the current market the only way to realistically look at any potential deal is the 'price to change'. Take no notice of the numbers on either side, it's the price to change that is the most important. How many readdies you need to part with. Doesn't matter if the dealer kicks you in the nut's on your boat as long as they are realistic on the boat you want to buy. Any decent dealer knows the current state of the market and should be prepared to cut margins to get a deal done....

Thats exactly the point Gary, you WILL be biding your time, or you WILL drop the price to sell it, it is a buyers market at the moment and things are moving very slowly,it is heading for the tail end of the season and prices will come down even more, take Paul's boat for instance.

It is a sad fact that everything is worth a lot less at the moment!

This is so true, providing you wish to change but if you need to realise your equity for other reasons then you will be in for a shock, I see it every day!
 
When people start knocking dealers they need to take a look at the costs involved before they have a moan about them, when dealing in high end items there can be very good rewards but the costs involved are also high and so are the risks, don't forget there is a VAT implication on the margin, then there is the cost of the money, and the list goes on and on, the higher the asset to be dealt the higher the margin needs to be to make it worth while!

Andy Hi you are so right but this week alone I found a Phantom 46 thats as advertised as a part ex, got the speel from the dealer about values etc and thought as the converstaion went on we could be in here, he then made an offer on mine so I said ok how much to swap, the figure came back which was the retail on his, so I said I may as well sell mine private for that price and come back to you with a counter offer, he asked what would that be? so I took of what he had took off mine then the usuall 10% he had taken off mine plus his trade in which brought the deal back where I wanted to be in the first place, his answer to that was a big fat NO, I said fair enough you cant have it all your way, he said its not all my way, I said do the sums!! End of conversation, I did hear that the new models he was selling were not doing that well by the 2nd saturday of the show....... I wonder why!
 
I believe you got to get alongside the dealer, work together, these are tough times, every opportunity must be explored.
I talk to mine most days, asking for feedback, working on presentation, discussing what more can be done.
Be clear, tell them what you expect.

it's a good point.. I'm in no rush to sell and will end up putting her on Ebay no doubt as a classified ad for 90 days at a cost of £20 I think from recollection.. I've done well in the past with that approach... if in that time a px deal comes up that keeps the price of change, as said, within my limits then I'll still have the option to go for it.

besides, swmbo wants this bloody extension sorting too so that will no doubt slow things down a bit:rolleyes:

Unless that dealer's more realistic he's gone to be looking at his Phantom all over the winter and well into the New Year. Costly excercise for him and those boats are not exactly holding their values particularily well nor is there a queue of buyers from my experience of selling mine. In this climate you've got to be flexible or keep looking at your stock! My V40's ( which I took in part ex) up for sale but not even any interest in that whatsoever. For me to move it I need to offer part ex again and make an interesting deal for the potential purchaser then take their boat and sell that. If we want top money for our boats then you have to put in a lot of effort and hassle.

Paul, I feel your pain there.

As you know my boat is about to undergo a major refit with basically everything electrical / mechanical on the boat being replaced. Even the guts of the engines are now being replaced with new parts e.g. pistons, big ends, shells, cylinder liners etc. I am just so glad I'm not paying for this refit since the cost of even simple bits like pistons is truly outrageous.

At the end of this refit the boat will be like new again and I will have added a few improvement such as a bow thruster, however, the boat will still be worth I am sure less than we paid for it. My current plan is to keep it for a year or so to enjoy and to demonstrate to a future buyer that we are selling to upgrade / get out of boating rather than to offload a dodgy boat.

A boat can never be considered as a good investment!

Feedback from show.

Very slow on used boat sales this year, had to nudge broker to get feedback, result is 2 viewings this Friday, fingers crossed for a result.

Thanks for the update Paul,

As someone else trying to shift a boat so that I can be a Cash buyer I am also struggling. Mine is low-mid price asking price range for the model but is the best spec one ever built and is immaculate.

Just a matter of finding a person who wants it and can afford it...easier said than done. I always thought Yachts sold easier than MOBO’s, but not in the current climate (Med Spec). I would PX it into Essex but the shipping will cost a small fortune and I want another Med spec anyway (mind you like the Prestige 46 they have in, though too much at the moment). I will keep an eye on their site over the winter anyway. The problem with trying to sell boats in the Med at the moment...it is a dead market!

On a more positive note have a buyer for the Centre Console here in the Med, lost about 30% off it in 3 years from new....however I am being realistic and just building up a cash supply to swop the big one as want to get rid of Finance option.
