I've been trying to sort my diary to make time to visit SIBS and Swanick, but its looking unlikely that the time I can make, probably Monday 17th, will do both of them justice.

I have never been to a used boat show before but as I am in the market (or soon will be) for a used boat it would seem to make more sense for me to concentrate on Swanwick?

Your collective experience and advice would be welcome /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Swanwick usually has a decent collection of boats. You can get an advance copy of the catalogue from Premier. Also they run a bus to and from SIBS if that helps

Thanks. Just ordered the catalogue. Thought it might be more sensible than having my head turned and my finances stretched by the shiny new boats at SIBS /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck!

If you can possibly manage it, a good time to go is the week before it opens. All the boats will be there, they are clean and shiny, a few owners will be around still fettling their boats; the good models will go early, and you will not be queueing to view.

Most of the brokers and yards in the Hamble area do a used boat show or open day around Boatshow time.

We are doing one the weekend following the boatshow I believe.

What kind of boat are you looking for, perhaps I can direct you to the type of boat you are looking for?

BrokerBen. I have already been advised by Jezbanks to pm you with regard to my possible boat requirements which I was holding off doing as my budget and timing is wholly dependent on an imminent house move and I didn't want to tempt fate before exchange/ completion /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It will be my first boat on a budget of about 20k. Will be based in Eastbourne (subject to the house move!). I am keen on a sports cuddy of some kind (not too worried about the sleeping side, more the loo for SWMBO /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif!) as a decent day boat, maybe the odd one night sleepover, to hone my boating skills before moving up in budget and size in a couple of seasons.

Other forumites have sensibly recommended a Merry Fisher or similar because of the area. However I am keen to have an open cockpit as I have experienced navigating in power boat races and like to have the wind and spray in my hair!

Having said all that I have a six year old and also quite like the idea of a walk around such as a Jeanneau Cap Camarat or similar for the added safety.

Open to suggestions really.

Don't just stop at Swanick - go across the road to Solent Motor Yachts and also to Deacons across the bridge - although it's more saily depending on the size of boat you are looking for.

I would go to SIBS rather than the used boat show. At SIBS you can see all different types of boats rather than just a few makes at a used show. F'rinstance if you're thinking of a Merry Fisher, you can look at all the competition in the peche promenade style to see which you prefer.

Its not difficult to find used boats to view once you've decided what style and make to go for. You'll find SIBS much more useful in making that decision than any of the used shows IMO.

You have a PM Mr. Wilko /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The boatshow is a great chance to look at all the competition and different styles of boat...

If you'd like to have a quieter time viewing specific boats go and find them at the used boat shows which are really just a load of boats on sticks in yards which you can get access to.

Wilco

We've been looking at boats similar to your requirement.
Firstly we looked at the Quicksilver Pilothouse 640 - a lot of boat for the money and lots of deck space - cabin a bit sparse but OK for a night.
The Merry Fisher 625 is a higher quality boat, which is replected in the price, a nicer cabin but much smaller deck - only comfortable for 2 adults I would say (4 on QS 640)

We're going to SIBS, I think you realy need to compare all the boats you are looking at in the same place to get a good idea of what your priorities are

Hughn and MVP I like your thinking and advice. I am now planning to go to SIBS on the Monday. Brokerben I have relied to your pm.

Thanks to all.

As a veteran boat looker and regular nosy parker at the Swanick used boat site, doubt you will find much in the way of newish small fast fishers, boats tend to be bigger older flys that have failed to sell at other sites around the UK for whatever reason.
However if you want to spend a pleasant couple of hours ferreting around a Princess 56 or Fairline Phantom with your only obligation being to lock up and return the keys when you have finished,we will no doubt see you there.

A far more relaxed experience than the show proper and couple of nice pubs within staggering distance to boot and better still no pretending that you this very second are just about to reach for your TSB cheque book to put a deposit on a overpriced shiney white box with impractical carpets and wanting to go into minute detail as to how you set up a fake company in Iraq/Italy in order not pay any tax on the purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

will be there too I like looking at boats unacompanied its much more relaxing, you can speak about the faults outloud and make your mind up in your own time.

Can we use the bus in the other direction, i.e. TO SIBS from Swanwick? I only ask 'cos our Merryfisher is parked across the river at Deacons. We'll pay to get in SIBS, honest!

That's up to Premier /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif but the bus was not full when I used it....

Last year the bus stop was on your left from the main entrance, good luck! If Premier have a stand they will no doubt tell you all about it.
