USB in the cockpit

That's a fair point. I wasn't thinking what depth if water it was waterproof too :) we have a 54 foot centre cockpit. In a force 8 no water gets in. May be I should have said weather proof.

At what depth is that solution still waterproof? :)

Still rains on 54 footers :)

Not under my bikini :)

Seriously though. This one is apparently for motorbikes where there woukd be a lot of fun and fine spray. To be fair I didn't seal the join to the steering column which I probably would if it was exposed.

My comment was more about the likelihood of water getting into a centre cockpit.

Yes. I agree. Had one for a while - and it's on a MAB. Nice product.

The link takes you to the old version. This is the newer, lower profile, version that they offer. https://scanstrut.com/waterproof-dual-usb-charge-socket

My concern over the product used by the op would be corrosion in the sockets. On a boat it won't need to get wet to suffer, as there us enough salt and damp in the air. I have an old fashioned, non marine, cigarette lighter socket in the cockpit that has never been wet yet is so rusty inside that an electrical connection is all but impossible. If it's cheap enough it might be ok if you are happy to replace every couple of years.

It's worth noting a USB socket is a 12v (or 24v) to 5v converter, and as such it does draw power at all times, even when nothing is plugged in.

The no current load is small, but it is there, if you're not on shore power, solar or something, then you might want to consider and inline off switch.

Don't forget you can now get some pretty long USB cable - up to 4.5 metres, which gives you flexiblity where to mount the USB charger port.

Well worth splashing out on some good USB cables for charging, they can charge *much* faster than cheapos.

How is that possible? It is often quoted by those selling cables at the boat show, but they couldn’t give me a decent explanation. I’m a little sceptical but would welcome being educated about this.

Dunno but i assume it's fatter cables, more copper so less loss, it is definitely real though, a usb power meter shows the difference - significant .

The new Blue Sea fast charge sockets are worth a look. 2x 2.4 A and importantly very low power consumption, but they are not as waterproof as the Scanstrut units.
