USB GPS warning

Its getting odder, because Gigabyte suggested flashing the Bios to the latest version, which I did, with not much improvement though the dongle did find the satellelites without getting a fix from them. I the put the dongle on to a laptop, where it had worked perfectly yesterday, and it took a long time to get a fix, but eventually worked, but became erratic, losing its fix then regaining it. I tried a firmware update, but it did not work. I have ordered different make of dongle to see if it is better, as I now think that the dongle may actually be the source of the problem. I have no problems using Windows 10 which I have found to be stable, and less of a resource hog than most previous versions of Windows.

The Brix 3150 is now going to be gifted to SWMBO to replace the old PC she only really uses for the internet, partly because it runs on 19 volts and needs me to put a buck converter on to the boat to run it. The older Brix 2807 and 1900 models have both USB2 and USB3 ports, and crucially run from a 12 volt 2.5 amp supply, which I already have on the boat. I may buy one.

Yes. Or rather yes I have upgraded the firmware in my TV, and my plotter. Also DVD Players, various printers, and many phones. When I get an Internet connected washing machine, I will probably update that as well. I like to stay current.

Well - I'm very much in the camp of "if it a'int broke - don't fix it"

On the boat, I have a top of the range 4 station Raymarine G Series Glass Bridge system.
Once, I upgraded it to the latest Lighthouse software but things started to go wrong (heading sensor was being ignored) so I downgraded to the old stable version and thats where it is now.
There really isn't a need to change it - it works - no bugs - and the new software won't give me any new features that I don't already have.
IMO, just upgrading for the sake of it is dangerous.
Bugs creep in to all systems and you might not find the bug until you least need it.
Having said that, I do upgrade software - but in a very controlled manner - testing it carefully before relying on it.

Are you really saying that you are 100% happy to upgrade a plotter and the rely on it at sea.
If so, I would see that as foolish.

I wouldn't do the upgrade in the middle of a trip, but yes of course. It is no different from buying a new plotter that may already have an upgrade.

Operating systems evolve and the old versions become unsupported. Windows 7 left mainstream support in January last year. It it quite likely that it will not be supported by new processors, chipset or devices.

After any upgrade, you need to test it thoroughly.
As far as Windows goes, what "support" do you think you actually use?
I'm not being negative about doing upgrades - just very cautious and W10 is all about upgrading all the time.
Switch it on and there is no guarantee that it will work the same way as it did when you switched it off.

As I said above, I'm looking for a good alternative to Windows.
Hopefully, W7 will last me another 3 or 4 years.
I'd like to move to a Linux system but I have too much Windows based software.
I'm hoping that W7 will be my last Microsoft Op System
I will have to "bite the bullet" someday.
Maybe something like ReactOS might do the job by the time I'm ready.

To return to the original issue. I now have a Gigabyte Brix GB BXBT 2807 which has an older Celeron processor than the one in the GB BACE 3150. The U-blox 7 GPS worked and got a fix with no problems. Gigabyte think there may be a conflict between the USB dongle and the Broadwell chipset in the BACE 3150.

Sounds as though Gigabyte offers good customer service - you seem to be getting lots of help even if they can't solve the original problem. I have been recommended to Gigabyte by others too.

I have used Gigabyte motherboards in all the computers I have buit, and have never had a problem. In this case it just seems to be the Intel chipset that is the issue. Gigabyte have been quick replying to my questions.

You do know you can stop Windows 10 from updating? Just tell it you are on a Metered Connection.
Unfortunately, that only works for non-critical updates, what M$ consider critical - and that is a lot - will get updated anyway. This is a bit of a bind for me on board with a monthly 4G subscription to TIM Italy and limited to 20Gb of download.

But it doesn't affect the netbook on the chart table running OCPN with GPS/AIS transceiver input as it has no internet connection and has been happily running W10 for a year now with the only update occurring during the winter when I took it home and allowed it to connect to the router there.

I'm with you about keeping up-to-date as all my computers, Acer netbook, Asus Zenbook general purpose onboard laptop and home system desktop all are running W10 on the principle of support, soon to be only for W10.
