can anyone recommend a good (important: GOOD, cheap is not important ) surveyor in the Southampton area?

I need an urgent detailed survey for my boat.

I'm with Vic, Chrissie at Endeavour Surveyors is my recommendation. Strangely I have used a couple of the surveyors mentioned so far.

If shoping around, do remember that some surveyors specialise, although many will accept work outside of their usual sphere. Last year, whilst Tony was unavailable I needed a survey on a ultra light displacement sailing boat.

After purchase (on a favourable survey), I found so many issues that the repair costs outstripped the purchase price. With hidsight, it appeared that the surveyor knew little of the type and has left me significantly out of pocket.

I then had Tony survey the craft and has advised me so that I can complete the repairs myself. A great help.

Had the initial surveyor not later dissappeared to Canada I'd now be sueing him for a substantial amount.

Do check qualifications, liability insurance and personal recommendations.

Bill Dunlop of Lymington. He is so thorough, so critical, and so mean, that one boat brokerage tried to prevent me from using him.

He is expensive but worth it. You will get a voluminous report which will be an excellent guide for refitting the boat after you buy it. Don't use him if you don't want to know ALL of the boat's dirty little secrets.
